Jan 19, 2014 4:25 PM in response to Doug Lerner2by Doug Lerner2,I'm testing Airmail's latest beta 226 right now, but still running into bugs. For example, it seems to have frozen when trying to create a new label for a Gmail account. And the setting of labels is still not working right, like with regular Gmail shortcuts, where you can enter more characters to refine your selection. So if you have a lot of labels it's hard to select the correct one.
I will report this to them and go back to Mailplane for the time being.

Jan 19, 2014 4:42 PM in response to Doug Lerner2by Doug Lerner2,Other Airmail problems:
1. They actually did not fix the issue with not going on to the next unread email. After archiving you still end up at the previous, already-read email.
2. If I tried to nest a label with drag-and-drop the application went unresponsive. After 10 minutes I forced quit it.

I really appreciate you trying out all of these solutions and posting about it. I know it is frustrating but it is really helpful. Thank you!

Thanks. I'm back to Mailplane for the time being because it is (1) super reliable and (2) super fast. You never have to worry about whether things are properly in sync with Gmail or not.
But Mailplane is on the pricey side for an email app ($25) so it's hard to recommend to all my friends who are used to paying a lot less. Airmail after all is just $2.
And Mailplane has its quirks too. I'm trying to sort out some issues with them involving drag-and-drop of image files. For example, when I drag an image from a browser into Mailplane it compresses it as a .zip file! They say that does not happen at their end and they are looking into it.
But Mailplane is definitely worth trying. There is a 15 day free trial. And after that there is a very liberal 30 day full refund policy (and they are loose about that as will, allowing refunds even after that time).
I decided even if I later switch back to Airmail (once they fix their bugs) or even if Mavericks Mail works and I go back to them (unlikely because of the way they handle multi-labeled mails as duplicates) I will still keep Mailplane because your license lets you use it on all your computers, so it's easy to quickly set up and use right away anywhere since it doesn't actually download all your mails to your computer. That's especially good for somebody with, say, a MacBook Air that only has 128 GB SSD.

Jan 30, 2014 1:18 PM in response to neilstaiteby Garrett Bryant,So is there still no fix for the issue where in Mavericks Mail when you hit the 'delete' key it actually deletes the email from Gmail rather than archiving it like it has previously?

Feb 1, 2014 12:01 PM in response to neilstaiteby Suzy2014,Do I need to worry about problems with Mail under Maverick if I do not use Gmail? I am planning to buy a MAC and migrate from Eudora on Windows XP to MAC Mail. I am trying to avoid additional stress and issues. Should I wait? Thanks.

Feb 1, 2014 12:02 PM in response to Suzy2014by Csound1,What do you use instead of Gmail, that's the question.

Feb 1, 2014 12:05 PM in response to Suzy2014by lynjon1,Mac Mail works fine with Mavericks. I use Mac Mail and Gmail and I've only had problems with Gmail. You should be fine if you stick to Mac Mail

Feb 1, 2014 12:07 PM in response to neilstaiteby Suzy2014,Sorry, I never used a MAC. I assumed that I can migrate Eudora mail to the MAC and just use plain old MAC Mail as a replacement... I am not using now any other mail but Eudora as a POP client, with the ISP being Xfinity/Comcast (and their webmail when away).
-
Feb 1, 2014 12:10 PM in response to Suzy2014by Csound1,You're using Comcast email, and that works fine on Mavericks in Mail. Comcast are now offering Imap access in addition to POP, you may want to check that out.

Feb 1, 2014 12:21 PM in response to neilstaiteby Suzy2014,Thanks a lot, that's great to know. I would not want to divert the topic, and I am not technical. Would there be any advantage to using IMAP if I want to store my messages on my computer? Could I run into similar issues like w. Gmail if I use IMAP?
-
Feb 1, 2014 12:24 PM in response to Suzy2014by Csound1,Imap allows synchronization with iPads and iPhones etc, POP does not. Imap email is stored on the server and on your Mac.

Feb 1, 2014 12:31 PM in response to Suzy2014by Csound1,Comcasts implementation of Imap is by the book, unlike Gmail it is a standard setup. You should not have any problems.

Feb 2, 2014 8:30 AM in response to Garrett Bryantby barkofdelight,There is no option for setting the Delete key to mean "Archive" in the currently released version of Mavericks Mail. I'll leave it to someone testing the developer version to look and see if such an option exists there.
But there is a keyboard shortcut for "Archive". It is ^⌘A (Control+Command+A). (Yes, I agree, not a substitute for the simple Delete key, but IMO better than nothing.) You can also assign "Archive" to some other keyboard shortcut via Software Preferences → Keyboard → Shortcuts, but assigning it to the Delete key would require some advanced trickery or a 3rd-party keyboard mapping program. (And any keyboard mapping would apply to all your Mail accounts, unlike the preference that currently exists for iOS devices.)
Bark.
