I just tested it by buying something without entering the gift code, and it automatically debited my account and my balance went down. I guess I was interpreting the "Redeem" item incorrectly. I didn't need to redeem anything to use the credit on my account.

When I logged in, I saw the balance on my account. I then saw the "Redeem" menu option, so I thought I had to press that in order to redeem the credit on my account. I never tried to actually buy anything because I thought I was being blocked when I saw that screen asking for the code. It really was a riduculous case of user error. I might as well looked for the "any" key on my keyboard!
