It sounds like you have some word processing documents with the .cwk extension that you would like to open on your Mac. You should be able to use Pages to open them, outlined in this featured discussion:
Setting new default application for Appleworks (cwk) files
Right-clicking to select an application to open a document only applies to that file for that instance. Highlight a known AppleWorks word processing document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose Pages. If Pages is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the Pages application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with Pages. You can then double-click the AppleWorks word processing documents & they will open in Pages. Note that the icon for the AppleWorks files will have a plain, white icon. Repeat with AppleWorks spreadsheet files & Numbers. You can also drag the icon of the AppleWorks files to the Pages or Numbers icon in the Dock or Finder.
Be sure to save the newly converted files as Pages/Numbers & use them in the future.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

if you still have iWork 09 installed, Pages will open the word processing AppleWork 6 documents, Number the spreadsheet AppleWork 6 documents, ... ; however the newest versions of Pages, Number, ... no longer accept to open them.
If you do not have iWork 09, you can try to open them with the newest version of LibreOffice which may open the word processings and the draw/paint files ( or not). You can also take a look at http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page2.html ...

If you have upgraded your Pages to v5, and Numbers to v3, your prior versions of these applications that can open AppleWorks 6 WP and SpreadSheet documents are in /Applications/iWork '09 folder.
As was mentioned by fosnola, your mileage will vary with LibreOffice. I have opened cwk files in this application and the layout components are there, just different from your original intention.
