Back To My Mac and some VPN clients will fail on OS X 10.9 Maverick if the "Broadband Tuner" was previously installed. This failure happens because the Broadband Tuner sets some system parameters that are too low for Maverick.
To fix this problem, please uninstall the Broadband Tuner using the installer that can be downloaded at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL420
Note that you may have to override your security settings to open the installer because it was created a long time ago before developer ID registration began:
- In the Finder, locate the BroadbandTuner.dmg and open it to show its content
- Press the Control key, then click the BroadbandTuner.mpkg icon.
- Choose Open from the shortcut menu.
- Click Open and proceed with the installation
You need to restart the system to apply the changes.
A final note: the “Broadband Tuner" is uninstalled when either:
- The file /etc/sysctl.conf does not exists at all
- The file /etc/sysctl.conf exists but does not contain the following lines:
#
# Tuning network for broadband
#
# START
kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=512000
net.inet.tcp.sendspace=131072
net.inet.tcp.recvspace=358400
# END
