The reason I'm asking is because of the difference in region. Their TV is a different system, right?

It should not matter so long as they have an HDTV with HDMI that can handle 720p or 1080p which is what AppleTV normally outputs,
PAL/SECAM/NTSC are history where devices like AppleTV are concerned.
AppleTVs do not use regional video standards - even if they did if it's an Australian AppleTV it would have the correct standard for the TV. Airplay will work to the AppleTV which will do any display conversion (which it won't need to).
