Feb 2, 2014 11:51 AM in response to Alan424by laundry bleach,It is possible to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS using the recovery partition - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13871
This may not be necessary, however. The first thing to check is how much free space do you have on your hard drive? I drive that is full or almost so can slow down the computer.
Second, how much RAM is installed? Mavericks can run with only 2GB, but 4GB is a more realistic minimum, and if you are doing RAM intensive tasks, the more the better. See this article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1651
Be sure you have your data backed up before you do anything.
Best of luck.
