Feb 2, 2014 4:42 PM in response to JDPby PAHU,With a printer connected to the USB port of any AirPort device, you cannot use the vendor utility due to limitations of the USB port. This is documented by Apple in the first note in this article.
As for the utility not working when connected to the Mac via USB, what happens when you try to open the utility? And are you accessing the Utility via Printers & Scanners > Options & Supplies > Utility > Open Printer Utility?

Feb 2, 2014 5:58 PM in response to JDPby PAHU,Can you open System Information (located in Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left column. If the HP is the only printer you have on the Mac, then its information will appear in the right pane. If you have more than one printer, a list will appear in the top right pane. Select the HP and its information will appear in the bottom right pane.
Can you select all the information in the right pane for the HP, copy and paste it back here for me to check.

Feb 3, 2014 5:34 PM in response to JDPby PAHU,Thanks for the info. From what you have provided, the printer queue URI which is copied below, appears to be the printer that was connected to the AirPort USB port rather than a connection to the Mac via USB.
dnssd://Hewlett-Packard%20HP%20LaserJet%20Professional%20P%201102w._riousb print._tcp.local.
So can you confirm if the printer is networked or connected to the Mac via USB cable.

Feb 3, 2014 6:52 PM in response to JDPby JDP,PAHU,
The printer is connected to airport express USB port because I am trying to set up a wireless printer ,otherwise,I would not bother with the printer utility. The printer is not wirelessy set-up and does not appear to be connected to airport express.Everything I read tells me to connect to USB on airport to get a wireless connection. The printer works fine whether I connect to my mac or airport express.
Thanks

Feb 3, 2014 7:11 PM in response to JDPby PAHU,So as I mentioned above, with the printer connected to the USB port of the Airport Express, you cannot use the printer utiity.
If you want to connect the printer via wireless to the Airport Express, you will have to connect it first directly to the Mac via USB cable. This will let you run the printer utility and configure the wireless network settings. Once this is complete, you can disconnect the USB cable and then add the new printer queue for the wireless connection.
