Excellent post TT2. Why, oh why doesn't Apple ever acknowledge their **** ups!

Just a suggestion  - before going though the whole rigmarole of uninstalling, etc etc - you could just try a system restore (Win 7); apparently this doesn't always work but it worked a treat for me. System restore - problem solved. Don't then try the update again though, hopefully by the next update Apple will have fixed this infuriating bug.

    Thanks.

Sadly system restore doesn't fix the issue for everyone. For those still having trouble I have gathered more advice together here: Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates

None of these recommendations worked, so I recovered the MSVCR80.dll file using Recuva and have it saved to my desktop.  What do I do next?  I have Vista.  Thanks

There are multiple versions of MSVCR80.dll. Each build of iTunes should be connected to the one it expects to find, stored in the correct place. Downloading a copy at random and putting it somewhere that iTunes can see it is unlikely to work completely satisfactorily.

Would you please select the text below and copy with CTRL+C

    C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_x-ww_44 262b86

then press Windows Logo Key + R, then press CTRL+V to paste, and then click OK or press return.

You should either get a folder not found error, or the folder should open. If the folder opens you should see the following files with the relevant versions.

    MSVCR80.png

If the correct files are there, but iTunes still complains then there may be a problem with the registry key that tells iTunes where to look for the DLL.

Using Control Panel > Programs and Features to repair Apple Application Support ought to reinstall the correct version of the library.

    I got folder not found.

I tried reinstalling using Windows Explorer (I usually use Firefox) but got same frustrating results.  I already have a full time job and am fed up with this.  I appreciate your help but now I think I'll just do without and think twice before I buy my next Apple.

No worries, I was sort of expecting the folder not to be found, but I suspect I may have misunderstood the results of some experiments I was making yesterday, so perhaps it wouldn't have worked even if iTunes was working properly for you...

If/when you want to come back to it anything else useful I find out will end up at: Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

After updating to iTune 11.1,4 on a PC running Windows Vista, iTunes would not open and I got the following error messages:"Runtime error! Program: C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe R6034  An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.  Please contact the application's support team for more information."    and    "iTunes was not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes.  Error 7 (Windows error 1114)"

I removed and reinstalled iTunes.  During installation, I got the following error message "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start.  Verify that you have sufficient privleges to start system service."  I selected Retry -- got the same message.  I selected Ignore and got the two error messages in the previous paragraph.

iTunes was working fine before I attempted to update.  Now, it will not open.

    Please help.

Start by working through second box of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. If you get all of the components uninstalled, reboot, and remove any remnants iTunes should reinstall OK.

I didn't give up even though I said I would a few days ago.  IT FINALLY WORKED!  The difference this time was that I deleted the various Program files (some just wouldn't delete) as you suggested in the 2nd box.

The irony of it all is that my ITunes troubles reminded me that I planned to replace my current compuer in the next few months, so now I will be lookig for a replacement before I'm forced to do so.

TT, you've been a tremendous help and I deeply appreciate it.

(I think I replied in the wrong place to some of the above queries.  I'm the one who said he already had a full time job and was giving up on fixing this issue.)

    turingtest2,

Thank you very much.  It took two attempts to get rid of all of the remnants and associated programs, but it worked.  All of my previous experiences with iTunes updates were flawless.  This one was problematic.  Thanks again for your expertise.
