Is the event on a local calendar (under "On My Mac" ) or a server calendar like iCloud? It is possible the serve raccount is removing the alarm, as it is only relevant on your local system.

You may be correct because it is an icloud calendar. But I just tried and I don't seem to have an option to create a non-icloud calendar. When I go to "File" "New Calendar" the only option I have is iCloud.

To create a local calendar you will need to uncheck iCloud calendar syncing in System Preferences > Internet Accounts. Then make a new calendar in Calendar under 'On My Mac' before turning the iCloud calendar syncing back on. Run the script alarms from your local calednar.
