Q: .DNG are locked in iPhoto

Good day.
I am using Adobe DNG Conventer for my Canon RAW, to process them in Photoshop CS4

Put the converted files into iPhoto 9.4.2.

In info of the image can not see the format, the size is raw/dng like, when want to edit in the external editor(CS4) - iPhoto sends the jpg version. When want just simply Option/drag the file (big size, no format mentioned) - jpg goes out.

How can I use my DNG's after all?

Please, help.

Frankly given that work flow the only way you can have JPEGs as originals is to have misused the DNG conversion process and created the JPEGs during that process so when you imported that is what you got

A major part of your issue is using a very convoluted and complicated work flow which leads to user error

If you no longer have the full sized photos form the past then there is nothing you can do about that

for the future I strongly suggest simplfying your work flow - one way it to use iPhoto with PhotoShop as the extrnal editor - my personal suggestion is to not pass the RAW to PS but to edit the iPhoto generated JPEG - this way when you save i(not save as - save) it goes back into the iphoto databse correctly and you have no duplicates and always maintain yrou RAW orriginal if you need it and you have a very simple workflow that meets all of your requirements

Or quit using iPhoto and develop a work flow that does not include it

You are absolutelly right, I've messed up everything.

Anyway, iPhoto is a great programm with awesome preview options and QuickEditing.

One more question: you have said that the iPhoto library is kind of a damaged. Should I just get rid of wierd files and go on living with my all-jpgs in it, or should I create a new library? It is updated to its last version for now, so maybe something else should be done?

Thoses are not technical isseus but personal choices - if the library is corrupted (I seem to remember that tD thought so althought I'm not sure that it is) then that needs to be resolved for sure - there is no risk in Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

Other than that it seems like there is no harm in keeping the old images around if you have any potential chance of needing them - if they are of no use then delete using iPhoto emptying the iPhoto trash often  - remember do it in small batches as older versions of iPhoto choke on large trahs bins - and I still recommend not doing too many at a time

Many thanks to you LarryHN, Terence Devlin and Old Toad. You are doing great job dealing such tricky issues and dummy users as I am.

It is not the end of everything for me as I still have my jpgs. (Adding more Film Grain when editing would make them look even nice )

But I got my lessons really well)
