Q: iPhone 4 Black Screen But Phone Works

I have used the iPhone 4 (Factory Unlocked) for more than a year now with only minor issues. Like on a usual day I was playing a word game "Rumble" then quit the game, connected my earphones for music & pressed the "Home" button on the phone to unlock it and the screen was Black. This was a sudden shocker!! . I just put the phone to rest for a while & after about an hour crossed my fingers and tried the Home button again but the Black screen continued. So the backlight of the iPhone works I can say that bcoz I see the phone luminates but the "Slide to Unlock" is cannot be seen. Since I have been using the phone for a while I know the exact position of "Slide to Unlock" so if I slide my finger it unlocks too with the default "unlocking (click) noise" but again the icons of the apps cannot be seen, all I see is a fadely luminated grid. I receive SMS's and Calls although I cant read them nor can I see whos calling. Since the screen is blank I cant operate the phone but the phone seems to be working. I hence tried the reboot, restart, shutdown & start again, restore backup, update iOS everything a desperate user would do but nothing has worked till now. There is not much discussion on this issue anywhere hence No resolution. I am gonna visit an Apple  service center today and keep my fingers crossed. I have taken utmost care of the phone. Till date it is scratchless, spotless. I miss my phone .

This SUGGESTEIOn by JAN FINSTEIN WORKS.

    THANK YOU JAN

Hi I posted on this thread 5-6 days ago. The phone has had the black screen 3 more times in 5-6 days. What I do to fix it is swipe the phone to unlock it... Because even though phone looks dead it's still alive and you'll hear phone unlock. Then I press and hold down the home button for few seconds until you hear the beep that allows you to give phone a voice command. Then I press the power button on top of phone and it works again.

OH MY GOD!!!! Thank u so freakin much I was so freaked out. I was just trying to upload a photo to facebook but it wouldnt upload probably because it was too big. Then I went to  my settings and saw that my faceook is growing in space and after I tryed to upload the video like 3 my facebook became like 3.4 gb in storage and I freaked out cause I was almost out of space so I deleted it but the screen froze probably because it was very big in size. And then the screen turned black but I didnt panic cause this had happened to me once before and last time I just left my phone and after like 20 mnutes it turned back on. But this time it wouldnt turn back on even though I had left it overnight, then I STARTED FREAKIN OUT!! I was like what the **** turn on u freakin dumb phone and I almost started beggin it to turn back on. Then I opened my laptop and tryed to restore it cause I had all my stuff in icloud but I said to turn off find my iphone BUT I COULDNT BECAUSE MY PHONE WAS ****** OFF!! So I deleted find my iphone app from my computer and thought if there wouldnt be any app neither will there be anything in the settings but it didnt work. So I came here and saw this and tried this and it worked. THANKS A LOT!!

I experienced the same thing today. I was just on the phone with my Dad and was going to compose an SMS after our conversation when all of a sudden, my screen just turned black. I knew it was still running as I could hear the "click" when I pushed the power button.

I also asked someone to call my number and it was ringing just fine but no image on the screen. I tried plugging it into the power outlet but still no change.

I quickly googled for help and tried the suggestions in this thread.

What worked for me was to simultaneously press the power and home buttons for about 10 seconds until the apple logo appeared. In another 15 seconds, my phone rebooted and went back to normal.

I just hope it doesn't have any more "black" episodes.

Has anyone found a solution that lasts?  I have updated my iphone 4 to the latest update, updated Itunes and my screen goes black several times a day.  It sometimes reacts to the reboot, but sometimes I have to reboot as many as five times, and it will still go black an hour later.  I deleted any programs that had been installed in the past few months.  Any help other than reboot would be appreciated.

Just turn off the power then turn it on again. To turn off the power click and hold the power button and after few seconds slide your finger over the top of the black screen with your vission

    Dear Falano,

The same thing happened to me this morning.

Here's what I did to restore my phone:

    1.  press and hold power button

    2.  swipe top of screen, L to R (phone is now off)

    3.  wait 10 seconds

    4.  press and hold power button until Apple logo appears

(Basically: shut the phone off as if the screen was illuminated; then restart)

    Hope this helps!
