Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Maybe the Samsung is slightly whiter but not by much. The greys are definetely greyer though. Maybe I'll give a slight edge to the colors on the Samsung, but I would have been satisfied with either. Don't get bummed if you get a LG, those screens are still pretty solid. These are new revisions of the screen should not produce IR on both. Although backlight bleed is still very much an issue for both makers. (Most people don't notice that though.)

If only they will address the creaking issues! My friend just bought a new late 2013 15" ... he didn't understand what creaking was (thinking it was pure OCD) -- but now does! He's only had his unit for 5 days.

The creaking is an issue but it's not too common...Out of my 5 replacements only 1 had it. So it's probably less common than you think. I took the creaking mac to the genius and was told it was normal behavior for Mac's but clearly it wasn't considering I've had replacements that weren't. Nor did the store models do it. Most of these "genius's" aren't too smart/logical even if you present them with the facts.

I'm pretty happy because I think after 5 I finally have won the lottery today. White uniform Samsung screen, no creaking, no dead pixels, no major backlight bleeding, and no battery issues. Let's just hope I don't break it some other way.

WRONG! you have zero evidence that "These new revisions of the screen should not produce IR...." In fact the opposite is true based on what we've read in this thread. Have you bothered to read? So you're either being irresponsible or ignorant or you're another apple shill. Either way, your statement is false. Of course if you have some NEW evidence with a statement from Apple, lets have it.

Then clearly *you* haven't read a lot of the thread. Considering I've made dozens posts complaining about numerous screen issues. Oh but I guess I'm an "apple shill" okay. It's just an observation that the new LG and Samsung screen models in the late 2013 are a lot less susceptible to IR. I went through 5 LG screens (LP154WT1-SJE1), the same model and none had IR. Nor can I find any evidence that anyone has had IR in that model yet, of course it can develop in time but its too early too tell. Do prove me wrong with your evidence. Find someone that has had IR with the LP154WT1-SJE1.

Doesn't IR develop over time? Personally, I'd rather have a whiter (non-yellow) display with IR.

Not entirely true. I had a 2012 RMBP that had IR day 1 out of getting it.

As you said, it's too early to tell and that's why you shouldn't make those statements that anything has changed as you may be causing new customers who just skim over the last couple of messages a lot of grief or if they go by what is written in the last page or so. As you also say, you went through 5 screens, which means you obviously didn't have them long enough to get the IR (in your case). We've had plenty of guys come to this thread a year later. Of course it can show right away but you don't know.

Apple can either make a statement on the issue that it's fixed or as far as I'm concerned, it's not fixed. Of course if they do make a statement then they have a lot to answer to as far as all the screens out there that are defective.

Lastly, they change a model number, and in your mind that changes something? I guess they don't have to try anything too clever to fool you. It's a number, I could represent many things that have nothing to do with solving anything. However, I guess we'll find out soon enough if that model has the defect that all the rest do.

I don't have to show evidence about a model number, I have 600 pages of evidence that Apple is selling defective notebooks with IR, the model number means nothing.

I haven't posted in this thread before. I have a 2012 Retina MBP with LG screen, and the ghosting is getting worse over time. It's no longer just a momentary fading shadow, but a recognisable image that remains for 5-10 minutes.

LG has never been a quality brand. Even back in the 80s when they were called Lucky Goldstar everyone knew to keep away from them.

It is out of warranty now (I just got the standard 1 year warranty) so nothing I can do about it. But when I next want to upgrade, how can I sell this computer to someone else in good conscience? Maybe I could turn it in to a home server and just leave it in closed clamshell mode.

Apple sells computers that are good for only 1 year. What a shameful situation. Why isn't this bigger news.

    Hello everyone,

I have the same problem with the image retention as everyone else here. I also have two questions:

    1. Did anyone notice that the image retention gets worse over time?

    2. Since I live in a country in which we do not have Apple Stores (we only have Apple Premium Resellers), I am wondering if there is a way to return the MacBook to Apple in order to have the screen replaced, or replace the MacBook with a new MacBook?

I know it must be funny for most of you, but since we don't have official Apple Stores in my country, I am not very familiar with Apple's replacement policies.

    Thanks!

Many people have reported that the image retention does get worse over time. Hoping someone else can answer your second question.

Not sure in which country you are in but my understanding is the following: there is a 14 days no quibble return policy.

If in doubt return it and ask for a new model. If you have got IR on a brand new model is not a good sign. IR will not get less over time. In fact people here have reported it will worsen over the course of the lifetime.

Ask for a new model and not just for a new screen.
