Some have been known to recover for a while after a period in the fridge !

Yeah it was left in a cold room for about 12 hours before I tried again.
When you say it could be dead for good does this mean I will need to buy a new hard drive or even a new macbook?
Is there a chance that I might be able to re-install osx and have a 'clean slate' to work with?

Normally a new hard disk is required.
I have known disks which appear dead to be reformatted and work for years but this is not the norm.

If the drive doesn't show up, then you can't re-format it, sorry.
It'll require a new drive tp use it, or an external drive, but see the Install Video for your model to see if it's easy or hard...

Thanks alot for all your help guys.
I've accepted the inevitable and went ahead and ordered a new 320gb harddrive for £60. Collecting it tomarrow.
Hopefully after replacing this myself my macbook will be up and running again.
Never again will be an idiot and not back-up regularly.
