Q: Setting up network for remote access

I'm setting up a Mac server for a small business that is all Macs. My question is, in setting up the Mac Mini, what is the best way to have users that are primarily remote, have a user account and log in? The VPN is not active until you log in so how will user's authenticate?

You really don't want the remote users use a server home directory. This will be to slow over the internet.

The best solution is to have remote users have their worn local account on the remote machines and have them VPN in each using their own server based credentials. They will have their own home directory server as well, but they will not use thsi at all. (They can, but I don't see any users use it)

Finally apple was using 'Mobile home directory' technology, which basically allowed for a user to make a copy of their server based home directory on a iBook. Then take the iBook out of the office, and when they returned to could resync it. The process took quite a bit of time, and users did not like it. So I don't know if anyone is still using that.  http://krypted.com/mac-os-x/enable-server-side-file-tracking-in-os-x-mountain-li on-server/

So I don't know if anyone is still using that.

I use it now from Lion Servers with Lion, Mt Lion and Mavericks client system. Works fabulous! Fast wifi, or better cable, is needed you have user accounts that result in large changes between syncs or those that have a manual sync schedule set.
