Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Erika, it sounds as hardware problems more and more. Do you have data on your MBA that are absolutely neccessary to save, and that you cannot recreate? Buy a small external USB disk format it Mac OS Extended (journaled) and copy those data to it with Finder. If you do not succeed to format it (with Disk Utility), format it on another computer, when that is a windows computer format it in Fat32.

Is it possible to answer the questions?

Prepare for  an appointment with Apple Care (make an appointment before and explain what is wrong with your MBA (have the serial number ready).

    Lex,

There is only one device listen under "Devices" in Finder. The device is named Remote Disc and when I click on Get Info, it comes up with nothing. Here is a picture of hat I am seeing:

    Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 9.03.38 AM.png

As for giving you the non standard applets in System Preferences, can you tell me how to do that? I dont know what non standard applets are and nothing comes up when I search the words in Finder.

Also, it may be beneficial for you to know that I accidentally deleted the hard drive a while back when I was trying to figure out why my computer took so long to log in. I took it to my school's technology center and they reinstalled the software and wiped the computer clean, which (they said) fixed the hard drive issue. It did not fix the slow login issue at all though.

Hopefully this information gives you a better idea of the problem. I will call and make an appt with the apple store today.

Thank so much for your help!

This is the external CD/DVD dirive (if you have one). You can only see what it is when you have such a thing connected.

You probably have nothing important on your internal disk after the school "wiped it clean". If the internal disk is dead or dying you loose all that you have on it. This MBA is about 5 years old, not uncommon for the disk to be dying. If there are any files that you want saved, do that on a small external disk, or even on a USB stick.

What I wanted to know about the Applets: forget it, there probably are only the standard ones: Applets are the icons in the System Preferences; you find the System Preferences in the Applications Folder.

Post back when you have Apple looked at it.

inanna hunter until LexSchellings gets back to you, get rid of both the MacKeeper and CleanMyMac garbage. Both of them are scam products that will only cause problems. Never pollute a Mac with trash like that.

Follow the instructions below to remove MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components. Unfortunately CleanMyMac's uninstallation instructions do not remove all its components, and in an abundance of caution I recommend nothing less than erasing your Mac completely and rebuilding it from the ground up.

The fastest way to take an exquisitely designed and painstakingly engineered Mac and make it run like a steaming pile of dung is to install and use so-called "cleaning" or "security" products. Using them to "clean" your Mac of files or operating system components it considers wasted space will result in system corruption that makes merely removing those products insufficient to restore a Mac to its previous state. The only way to do that is to restore your Mac's content from a backup created prior to using it or similarly categorized junk.

Those are not the only programs capable of performing such extensive harm. They are not even the worst of them, but they are very popular due to marketing techniques that are as aggressive as they are effective.

You may have other problems but those are the most obvious. You may be better off erasing your system and reconfiguring it. Don't reinstall the junk.

    • If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
    • Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
    • Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
    • Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.

You will be asked to authenticate (twice):

    Uninstall MK confirmation.png

You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:

    Uninstall MK.png

    • Just Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.

After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

    Hi ianna,

You have more than enough Ram and more than enough space on the disk.

    1. as John has already said: indeed, the first you have to do is getting rid of the crapware MacKeeper and CleanMyMac: there is an uninstaller on the Mackeeper site (zeobit.com), and when you start CleanMyMac, there is an uninstaller in the main menu. See also John's post. This is very important.

After that restart the Macbook and empty the TrashBin.

    2. in SystemPreferences, Users&Groups, LoginItems:

remove all entries (this just stops them always running after startup, it does not uninstall them), use the minus sign underneath.

    Then restart the Macbook.

    3. I advise to uninstall Cafeine, does not do anything for you; use the settings in Mavericks.

    4. I strongly advise to uninstall Elmedia Player: read here how to do it:

    http://wiki.eltima.com/user-guides/elmedia-player/uninstall.html

When you can not do with the Apple applications, download and install the best (and free) player: VLC; do that later after the clean up.

    5. I am not familiar with QQ, but I think that Apple Messages is good enough, thus I propose to use that and uninstall QQ.

    6. Go to MacintoshHD / Library / ApplicationSupport /  delete the Simble folder with everything in it. (it is installed with another third party app, when necessary it can easliy be reinstalled.).

    7. Now the rest of the cleaning:

Go to MacintoshHD /Library/LaunchAgents/   delete the file with  "culator.SIMBL" in the name.

Go to MacintoshHD /Library/InternetPlugins/  delete the two  AdobePDFViewer plugins (they are not needed for anything)  and delete the  JavaAppletPlugin (Java is not installed, this is a leftover form earlier installations)  and delete the  nlastpass   file (if it is still there after the uninstalls in point 1).

    8. Go to your Homefolder /Library/InternetPlugins/  delete the  iGetterBundle ! If you have that downloader still on the Macbook, uninstall it. and you may also delete the QQmail file and the txtfn file.

    9. restart the computer, empty the TrashBin

    10. Check if you have the latest versions of Dropbox and GoogleDrive:, then put them in SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems again.

    11. post a new etrecheck list

Was trying to follow John's instructions to remove the craps but failed locating them in Applications. I remembered I removed them long ago by dragging them to the trash. Any idea why they became ghost files? How am I going to find them?

    John,

According to this article http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-2, I should download and reinstall CleanMyMac and then to uninstall it completely again?

    And so does MacKeeper?

You can do that, but as I wrote MacPaw's instructions do not remove it completely. It's junk. They will not care if it ruins your Mac, and their End User License Agreement - which you agreed to by installing it - completely absolves them of any responsibility should that occur as a result of using it.

All those companies want is your money. Once they get it, their mission is complete, and you aren't even entitled to a refund if you paid for it. You agreed to that too.

All I can suggest is what I would do if I were in your situation, which would be to completely erase your Mac and reconfigure it due to the unknown effects of having garbage products installed. However, that is a personal decision only you can make.
