Q: Is Mt. Lion (10.8) OS compatible with FCP 7 and other FCP Studio 3 apps?

I am currently running Lion (10.7.5) on a 27" iMac 3.4 Ghz.

Is Mt. Lion compatible with Final Cut Pro 7 and FCS 3 studio apps like Compressor 3.5, Color and DVDSP4? Will these programs still run or will they be not supported by the new OS as has been the case with past apps when a new OS is introduced?

Thanks,

Phil

Sounds good, Syd. I took RippleTraining which is about half the $ of Larry's course. Did you take it?

    Hi Syd,

Just checking to see how you're making out with FCP X. I understand that 10.1.1 has updated their "library" file system. I have some free time between projects now so I may take another crack at FCP X. I'm also considering Adobe Premiere which is very similar in format to FCP 7 and can handle any codec without the need to transcode to ProRes. You can get the program for $20 per month, with regular upgrades, billed to your credit card. That sounds good at first but I've always been adverse to having a regular charge of any kind tacked on my credit cards.

Anyway, just wondering if you'd made any progress with FCP X.

    Best,

    Phil

    Greetings Phil;

I have to be honest, I haven't worked with FCP X since our last conversation.  The are some things about it that I really like...but at this point, it just doesn't work for me.  When I'm doing a project in FCP 7, I've created a template for organizing my projects that allows me to put all of the files associated with that project in one group of folders (I'd be glad to share this template with you if you'd like. Send me your email address and I'll send it to you).   My email is:  srodocker@mac.com

The editors that I'm connected with have either migrated to Premiere or are still using FCP 7.

I also agree with you about the monthly deal. It doesn't work for me at this point.  All the best...keep in touch.

Thanks for getting back to me, Syd.

I have a system for managing files in FCP 7 that I've been using for years. I prefer to label and organize the scenes myself and not have FCP X group them for me into close-ups, two-shots, etc. Also, I like to do my own "housekeeping", meaning discarding media files & render files when I don't need them in order to save drive space. As far as I know, FCP X doesn't give you that control. I'm actually very happy with FCP 7 as I have always been with Final Cut since version 2. But I realize it may not work on future OS's so I have to look for an alternative. I think I may give Adobe Premiere's trial version a shot and see if I like the feel of it.

In the meantime, I'll email you and I'll take a look at your template.

    Thanks so much.

    Best,

    Phil
