Q: partitioning drive to install Mavericks, but no Mac OS X installation disc

Am trying to install maverick on my macbook pro :

2.6 ghz intel core 2 duo, 4gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b)

But get the message that i need to partition my drive to GUID

am trying to follow the "Firmware updates for Intel-based Macs require a GUID partition scheme" help page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2434

have so far backed up my system with time machine

but am now stuck on step 2 "Start from your  Mac OS X installation disc, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility." as i dont have any installation discs

can anyone help please? i'm not even sure that my disc drive even works properly as have had problems with it in the past

is there any way around this, basically need to reformat my startup drive to GUID and restore my data it seems, is this possible without the discs?

any advice much appreciated! thank you kindly

    Hello there!

I am about to clean up my mac, empty my hd, and start out with clean sheets! I dont have the built in recovery partition that newer macs have(?), I have macbook pro mid2010. I also have run out of empty usb-sticks or drives to run the installer from and don't want to erase these. However, I have already partitioned one 500gb disk into three partitions (TM backup, bootcamp, and currently working on the third: the recovery partition). As you can see below: The whole disk has the GUID partition map scheme (as it should?). But it says at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5911?viewlocale=en_US, that one should not use more than one partition. Is that because of safety precautions, or to to be sure that we get everything right, or just because it wont work with more than 1 partition..?:)

    Thanks in advance!
