Q: iPhone 4 Black Screen But Phone Works

I have used the iPhone 4 (Factory Unlocked) for more than a year now with only minor issues. Like on a usual day I was playing a word game "Rumble" then quit the game, connected my earphones for music & pressed the "Home" button on the phone to unlock it and the screen was Black. This was a sudden shocker!! . I just put the phone to rest for a while & after about an hour crossed my fingers and tried the Home button again but the Black screen continued. So the backlight of the iPhone works I can say that bcoz I see the phone luminates but the "Slide to Unlock" is cannot be seen. Since I have been using the phone for a while I know the exact position of "Slide to Unlock" so if I slide my finger it unlocks too with the default "unlocking (click) noise" but again the icons of the apps cannot be seen, all I see is a fadely luminated grid. I receive SMS's and Calls although I cant read them nor can I see whos calling. Since the screen is blank I cant operate the phone but the phone seems to be working. I hence tried the reboot, restart, shutdown & start again, restore backup, update iOS everything a desperate user would do but nothing has worked till now. There is not much discussion on this issue anywhere hence No resolution. I am gonna visit an Apple  service center today and keep my fingers crossed. I have taken utmost care of the phone. Till date it is scratchless, spotless. I miss my phone .

    This one worked for me...

hold down both the home button and lock button for a while until the screen flashes slightly then goes black. Should be okay, as long as the hardware wasn't damaged or something. ITS68 is right about the vibrate button, i noticed it was halfway when it went black. Make sure that that is in a correct position like ITS said.  All the best

Experienced the same this weekend, dropped on the ground and got blank screen, but still working, home and sleep button didn't work, disassembled my iphone and apparently the lcd connector came loose. Follow these steps untill step 18 and go back: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairing+iPhone+4+LCD+Backlight+Dim+spot+issue/1024 1

    And it works again.

What worked for me is I plugged it into Itunes (shows there). I restored to a recent backup from earlier that day. You may be able to back it up first and then restore to that backup, but I am not sure if there is some setting screwed up that is causing the black screen - backing up first and restoring to that may reproduce the black screen if that is the case I would think.

    Nemipk

    Thank you for your solution.

I held the home and on/off button and the apple symbol appeared. Shortly after the phone was operational.

This just happened to me also. I basically had to do a hard restore & update thru iTunes to get the screen back.

    FIXED....

My Iphone 4's screen went black, it connected to itunes etc and when it was on charge it kept making the charge sound evey 5 -10 seconds?????

I tried every reset and safe mode etc etc with no joy.

I got myself an iphone screwdriver set for a couple of quid from ebay and opened it up.

after a lot of looking and fiddling i found that the lcd screen connector had come loose, simply clicked it in, put all the tiny screws back in and it worked.

saved me a fortune as i was ready to go and get myself a new phone !!!!

    Black screen of death.....ppffftttttt.

hi i also had the black screen problem and tried everything. i did try the hard reset, the apple logo comes on like a quick flash then its dead again. i then opened itunes on my pc pluged the usb cable in the pc but not the phone. then as i pluged it into the phone i pressed the home button till it says connect to itunes. itunes then gave me a message that the phone is in recovery mode and i need to restore it by downloading the ios 7.1 which i did. after a nearly 2 hour wait for phone to be restored still nothing it still gives me a black screen. then i went on youtube and found a video where someone had the same problem. he opened the phone and as a result of a fall the screen plug dislodged he pressed on the plug and pressed the on/off button it started working again. well i aslo did that i even disconnected the battery to a reset like that and made sure that the screen was pluged in properly but still the same problem, now i bought the phone 2nd hand and it was working fine until i tried to make the screen brighter and that is when the black screen problem started.  so from previous discussions of people that had the same result as me i see you recommend getting a new screen. i think the best is either the person i bought it from has to replace the screen as i paid for a working phone or they must take the phone back and refund me.

if there is another solution please let me know

I didn't read all of the answers ( so sorry if I'm spamming, but, hey, if someone aready wrote about this method, it's good to know that it worked for multiple people ), but here's what worked for me: pressing just the home and power button didn't work for me, so I also pressed the volume buttons. And that's it! The Apple logo appeared and it turned on. It was working a little slow after being turned on, but all is well now.

so i had the same problem. except with my iphone 4s  it was the brightness. which sounds weird.. but if you messed with the brightness for some reason it will go completely dark with no back light whatso ever. and i almost dropped 45$ for no reason because someone at the store told me it was the screen that was busted.. make sure, that if you can still get the photos off, and get siri to work and everything like that, make sure that it is not the brightness. i am not sure how long this has been happening like this for people. if at all, but just letting everyone know.

Hello folks!  My "4" died whilst playing a game. first the bottom half of the screen went black - then the jewels (in Bejewelled Blitz) left in the top half of the screen just faded away in front of me.  It was a very sad moment!   Suffice to say, have tried the "Turning off and on again" trick to no avail.  I have noticed also that it is running very hot on the left hand side looking at the back.  Also tried giving things a prod around inside with the cover off - but there have been no magical "Clicks" and no sudden ressurrections! So there we have it, I think it's just got a bit too excited and short circuited a little. I daen't pull anything apart - I'm rather good at losing things when I do that! So Apple Store here I come!

Verdict on my 4 today by an Independent Repair Shop is that something's shorted on the Motherboard - They've effectively pronounced it dead. Which is odd as behind the dead screen the phone was still working/rings and still works with itunes!

My phone screen just went black. I've only had my phone since december. I went to go play a game I have on my phone and when i clicked on the app my phone froze and the screen went black. I even called my phone off someone else's and it vibrated but the screen remained black. I held the sleep/wake button and the home button down together till the apple sign showed and it was working. This has also happened to my friend the computer wouldn't reconize the phone and reseting it didnt work. She let it die and then help the sleep/wake button and home button down together and her phone started working.
