Q: I've replaced the battery in my iPhone 4S. Has no modem firmware, no IMEI but everything else works fine.

I've replaced the battery in my iPhone 4S. Now it keeps searching, has no modem firmware, no IMEI but everything else works fine. WIFI is OK. I'm pretty sure the antenna is OK and that the antenna cable is OK. Have re-seated the antenna cable connector. Is this likely to be a hardware issue or firmware issue. The iPhone 4S is running IOS 5.1.1

And how did you replace the battery?

I replaced it myself using instructions on the Internet. I was quite careful and used all the correct tools. The battery was the high capacity 2680 Ah but with same voltage 3.7V. Have since remove it and re-inserted original battery. However the problem of searching is still there. Funny because everything else including wifi works perfectly. SIM card works perfectly in another iphone 4 so it can't be the SIM card. Have tried all the obvious fixes such as re-boot, connecting to iTunes, system settings etc but no luck. Surely if the 3G antenna was broken you would still get a message that no SIM card was inserted but I don't even get that. It's permanently in the searching state. The iphone is not jail broken.

We can't advise you on this at all. The iPhone is not user servicable. Apple does not sell iPhone parts. Now that you've opened that phone, it's unsupportable. Apple won't touch it and there's no telling what you may have damaged when you attempted to fix it.

Find a competent 3rd party repair shop or buy a new phone.

I kind of like my iPhone 4S with IOS 5.1.1. I don't think I damaged the phone. And unless you are saying the design life of the iPhone 4S is 3 years, all batteries will eventually need to be replaced. I'm to accept responsibility but surely this can't be the first time this has happened and some clues from those in the know would be helpful - even if it just confirmation it is a hardware or firmware issue. So are you saying I can't take this to Apple for repair even though they would be the specialists.

Apple won't touch it. The iPhone is not user servicable. You have forfeited all rights to ever have it serviced by Apple by opening it up yourself.

No battery lasts forever. You could have had the battery replaced by Apple for about $70. Instead, you're left with a non-functional phone. Either find a competent 3rd party repair shop that might be able to help you or buy a new phone.
