Q: Mavericks does not recognize ExpressCard

Mavericks does not recognize the SIIG ExpressCard 34 Firewire card that works perfectly with 10.8.5.  Have contacted SIIG support.  So far no response.

MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9), i7 quad core AMD Radeon HD 6750

I also had an interesting development today........ I took the advice on checking out the Sonnet website (even though my firewire 800 xpress card is an unknown generic brand). I ran the suggested driver install (I did not, however, see an option for custom install) and suddenly my expresscard slot was recognizing these devices again.

I was able to connect with an external WD firewire drive I'd always used for backup again. Sadly though I didn't have as much luck with my UAD 2 Solo Laptop card. I could tell the slot knew the card was there because the LED on the card blinked red and green a couple times and then stayed green the way it used to (previously under mavericks the LED never stopped blinking, an indication that the card was not being recognized) however when I started the associated UAD control panel program the message was: "Driver Mismatch".

I stumbled across Multibeast which is basically a large collection of kext's, drivers, software etc. for people trying to get the Apple OS running on a PC.

This is probably enough information to get this message banned from this site....

    Still there....??

OK...... Part of the software in Multibeast is a collection of drivers for USB3.0 and eSATA devices. I installed all of these drivers and bingo, everything I plug into the ExpressCard socket now works. Even a LaCie dual port USB3.0 ExpressCard that I could never, ever get running faster than USB 2.0 speeds using LaCie's bundled software. It's now running at USB 3.0 speeds and I've also got all of my external eSATA HDD enclosures up and running.

    Happy days.......

Hey im a UAD Solo user and had suffered the same fate of no recognition but downloading the Sonnet fix as per nasachusetts post has solved the issue. Its working fine with 10.9.1 and UA 7.4.0 sofware.

GGM 1960 i hope you can get the same result!

If you download the QIO driver v. 1.2.7b (Download Now) and run the installation, you’ll be able to select the “Customize” option and choose to download only the IOPCIFamily_10.9 driver which will replace the existing file on the computer."

I have the same issue with two ExpressCard Readers: Lexar Professional CompactFlash reader and a Transcend ExpressCard SD card reader.  I work with HD video and RAW photos and enjoyed the fast transfer speeds with these cards. Now I have to wait up to two hours for some of my video files to move, this is unaccecptable!  This issue adds hours to my workflow.  As a student I am not in the postion to buy up to a newer model and shouldn't have to, this should be supported by Apple for all of us who have purchaced mid-2010 MBPs. I'll be visiting an Apple Store this coming week and intend to give them an earful of my disappointment.

That's incouraging but I'm still getting "Driver Version Mismatch". I thought perhaps it was because I didn't do the custom install so I went back and used the uninstall program then reinstalled using the custom install but that didn't do it either. Perhaps I should pull up a  Time Machine backup and try again?

Update:  I ran the Sonnet driver download and it did what Apple has failed to do, allow me to use both EC34 readers.  Bless you Sonnet for being proactive, shame on you Apple for failing your dedicated customers.

Are you running UAD 7.4.0 ?  I installed only the IOPCIFamily driver via Customize.

Yes I have 7.4.0. I perhaps screwed it up by not doing the custom install the first time. I don't know if trying to roll back with Time Machine would help but I'm not sure what else to do.

Indeed it is the same as mine.

Did you try to reinstall the Sonnet fix with

    just installing the IOPCIdriver.

Failing that I would use Carbon Copy cloner

to clone my drive then use Multibeast to install

relevant Express Card driver to the cloned drive. Boot from

cloned drive and do all your testing with the cloned partition.

When you get it working (positivity) repeat the process on

your main drive. I have some experience with Multibeast as I

have a Customac but I don't know for sure if this will work. I'm

on iPhone at moment but when I'm back at my laptop

I will check the driver options in Multibeast.

Not quite sure what you're suggesting, haven't heard of Multibeast.

    Hi all,

Just updated to 10.9.2 and now I can see all my PCI cards. 4 new Kext's installed including the IOPCIFamily.kext.

I had previously spoken with an Apple Engineer explaining the problem.

    Finally fixed.

hi there... can I confirm that 10.9.2 wlll now run all expresscard/34 on a Macbook pro 2010?

I'm thinking of getting a USB3.0 port (preferably the hidden type) for my 17" ...

do I still need to look for one of the FL1100 fresco chipset ones ... or will any of the older ones e.g. FL1000, NEC72020, Asmedia chipset ones also work now?

    thanks!

Can you confirm that 10.9.2 is a full-on fix for Mid-2010 MBP 17"? Since this is my crucial work computer, I won't update until I'm absolutely positive my Sonnet double-FW800 card isn't going to deactivate again like on Mavericks release.
