Q: Wirelessly extend a network from a Virgin Media hub

I ahve just bought a 3Tb airport extreme as I was told that the previous airport would only extend Apple to Apple, but the new ones would extend from any hub.

Before unwrapping can anyone confirm or otherwise?

Thanks

I was told that the previous airport would only extend Apple to Apple, but the new ones would extend from any hub.

Whoever told you this is not correct. So, if you plan to buy on this advice, be sure that you understand the store's return policy before you open up the box.

Apple has designed the AirPorts to only work with other AirPorts for the purpose of wireless extension.

I will stop short of saying that it is impossible for a third party router to work with an AirPort.....but it is extremely unlikely that it would.

And, it is even more unlikely with the newer AirPorts than the older devices.

What will happen....if you try to connect the Time Capsule using wireless....is that it might "join" the wireless network....so it would act like a wireless hard drive.....but it will not "extend" the network if it "joins" it.  In addition, trying to configure the Time Capsule this way is the worst possible choice that you can make in terms of performance.
