Jul 25, 2013 11:07 PM in response to SteveHby Barry,"How do I know if it's the right version? Will it also work with L or ML?"
Apple has gone through three stages (at least) in the way is sold iWork. Early versions were available in the boxed retail version, or bundled as demo/trial versions with some Mac models. The 30 day Trial version was also available as a download from the Apple site at one time.
With the release of Mountain Lion, current versions of the iWork applications became available only through the Mac App store.
The retail box version, while no longer available through the Apple Store, can be had from several resellers. What's on disk is not the current version, but one that will run on Snow Leopard (and likely on Leopard and possibly even on Tiger).
That version may require updates to the most recent Snow Leopard compatible version, and will require updates to run on Lion or Mountain Lion.
Thw retail box version came in two packages—Single User, and Family—the first licenced for a single user on a single machine, the second for installation on up to five machines owned by members of the same family, living under the same roof.

Barry

Jul 26, 2013 8:49 AM in response to Barryby SteveH,OK - so, what exactly should I be looking for? I understand the "boxed" version, but, how do I know if I'm getting the right "box"?
Is there a version number that I should be looking for?

Jul 26, 2013 8:55 AM in response to SteveHby Roger Wilmut1,'iWork '09 [ OLD VERSION]' is available in Amazon in both the UK and USA and that's what you want. (Old Version means not the one in the App Store.)

Jul 26, 2013 9:02 AM in response to Roger Wilmut1by SteveH,OK - Thanks. Is there an actual version number for "Old Version"?
Will the "old version" work with L or ML?
-
Jul 26, 2013 9:07 AM in response to SteveHby Roger Wilmut1,'iWork 09' is the version number. The box they show is the same as the one I have.
roaringapps.com reports it as compatible with both L and ML but of course we don't know whether they are referring to the box or the App Store version (though as those are actually sold individually it probably is the box). You could ask in the Pages forum - I'm sure there will be plenty of people there who have been running it on later systems and can advise.

Feb 1, 2014 6:43 AM in response to SteveHby basilmir,LibreOffice is the way to go... swithed and never looked back.
Same source code as OpenOffice but it works 10x better. They also have localization in many languages which is very nice, very well done.

Feb 10, 2014 4:41 PM in response to SteveHby Barry,★HelpfulHi Steve,
Numbers '09 is curently running under ML on my MBPro, as is Pages '09. Keyonote '09 probably runs well to, but I don't recall having used in on this machine. Several people posting in the Numbers for Mac community have both Numbers '09 and Numbers 3 installed and running under Mavericks without issue. Ditto for Pages.
The versions in the box set will not be the most recent versions of the three applications, so after installation and before launching any of them, use Software Update to check for updates. The updates will take the three applications to Numbers 2.3, Pages 4.3 and Keynote 5.3, the most recent (and likely last) version of the iWork '09 applications. Under OS X versions prior to ML, the update may be to an earlier version (same whole number parts, but lower decimal part).

Barry

Feb 10, 2014 10:17 PM in response to Barryby SteveH,Hi Barry,
For the past few months I've been using Open Office 4. It works OK for me, except that when I "type" I find
that the text on the screen has a hard time keeping up with my keeboarding. Sometimes I feel like I'm using an online service instead of a word processing application.
Reguards right back!

Feb 10, 2014 10:21 PM in response to basilmirby SteveH,I have tried using LibreOffice, but I much prefer the toolk bar in Open Office. Also, when I've used
LibreOffice saved and then reopened - it opens with Open Office - and I do not have OO set as my
default WP application.

Feb 10, 2014 11:07 PM in response to SteveHby basilmir,To set the default application for a certain type of file. Right click or ctrl click on any file of that type and click Get Info. A smaller window wil open. There is a drop down called Open with: expand that. Select the app you want in the first list and then click Apply to all.
Done, now every file of that type will open with the particular application of your choice.

Mar 14, 2014 9:43 AM in response to SteveHby stevena1,All,
I remember the days I used ClarisWorks, 3.0 and 4.0 (never really used the Apple branted version) and it was my first love of a productivity suite. IMO 4.0 was the best, 3 was the second.
I used ClarisWorks in school and at home with a hand-me-down Color Classic, and a hand me down PowerBook 190 with an LC-like CPU.
My tastes changed when I needed to do more business like work and went to the MS Office platform for the PC, it was never the same for the Mac after 1998.
But now since MS Office on any platform where you can't "do real work with a real Office" since 2007 for the PC, I'm going to use other platforms. been using iWork off and on just for that classic Mac Office suite even if iWork is not remotely close to Apple/ClarisWorks.
Finding out that LibreOffice supports old formats for Apple/ClarisWorks continues to make me lean towards that over OOO since its now in another organizations hands since Oracle bought Sun Micro.
I still have Claris files and I still have my Classic Macs and a printer if I so needed to get to them.
Sidenote, it is possible to run Snow Leopoard client Mac OS without the need of spending $ (or even worse your system's resources) to run AppleWorks. I suggest to look on other websites and its simple to do if you know what virtualization software to use and how to implement because I have in the past been able to do this with no problems. It should be fine for me to suggst this since this suggestion runs on an Apple labeled machine.
