With Mavericks some users are experiencing slow Finder windows the first time it is accessed. Some see similar behavior with the file selector. It isn't everyone and interestingly two people with the same computer model might see different behaviors. It must be driving Apple programmers nuts trying to track down the cause.
For what it is worth, between home and work I use 6 different computers ranging from a 2007 iMac to a 2013 mini and of the 6 one of them exhibits this behavior consistently. Another (a notebook) intermittently. The others, not at all.

A couple things that helped me with the same issue :
Make sure all apps are up to date
Unistal unneeded aps
Turn spotlight off on large folder and file hieaechies
Turn local snapshots off
Make sure indexing is complete by leaving the computer running over night. Make sure it is running and does not go to sleep
All else fails. A fresh install and manually transferring data could do the trick...unfortunately in the end this Is the only route that worked for me.

Thanks for this. How do I turn Local Snapshots off? and what affect will that have?
For a fresh install, how will this affect my wider set up? WIll all my apps and setting be kept in tact?
