Q: Why did FCP start crashing everytime I import footage?

Everytime I try to import footage FCP crashs and has become useless. I have tried several different cards and even from the local disk drive. I have removed every event and project. This just started two days ago. I have clear my plist. Very furstrated.

It appears to have something to do with CPSDGradientDescriptor::Load

ANY IDEAS???

Here is the crash report:

Video footage from my gh3 on an SD cards. I have also tried importing ProRes footage from old projects on my local drive. I even tried making a screen recording with Quicktime and importing that. It all crashes FCP. It happens under 30 seconds upon opening the import window.

Tom I don't live anywhere near and Apple store. Is that how you got to level ten? If you don't have anything remotely useful to add, please move on to another thread.

It sounds like a hardware problem. I'll move on.

I have repair disk permissions. I have also ran the short and long hardware test both passed. I made a new account and DID NOT have any problems with FCP crashing. This leads me to think something that is specific to my account is the problem.

So besides creating a new account does a method exist to repair or rebuild accounts?

I have tried Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs. Still no luck.

i can only guess here.  My intuition says you have a corrupt plug-in, project/event, or some system process issue. Try this thrad:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17380276#17380276

Download the Pro Maintenance tools that is in the above thread and/or the fcp prefernces trasher utility:

    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/

One thing is certain. Something has changed to make the problem start.

I haven't ever had to trouble shoot your issue, never used an error report with any degree of certainty.

Perhaps download Etre Check, System Pal, open activity monitor & console and watch what happens when you try to open the Application.

Do you have a recent backup of your system - or at least your version of FCP X?

    Good Luck...

One thing you might try is to open Activity Monitor and see what else is running at the same time. Make sure all other activities are "closed" (f.e., email, browser, etc.), and turn the Airport off. The less stuff that is going on the better.

In Activity Monitor, before downloading the video files, see what you have for memory. With the browser, Empty Cash. Empty the trash in everything. FCPX has a trash too.

The computer is certainly a late vintage one so, give enough RAM memory, it should handle 10.0.9 okay. I know this can be very frustrating. Been there, done that.

@Searchin99 I am curious what you consider handle. It may be a little old but I have 16gig of ram, the fastest processor available for this model and a 1TB SSD. I have made several thousand $'s with this machine. It handles 4 stream HD multi cam projects like a champ.

Well it is clear that if I could not turn on my iPhone I might get some help here, but little else on something that requires more. I guess real pro's got better things to do then troubleshoot for free. Like the saying goes you get what you pay for.

THE FIX for me was to create a new admin account. Delete my old account but keep the folder. Then rename the folder from USERNAME DELETED to the old USERNAME without DELETED. Then I made a new account using the same long and short-name. When prompted I choose use existing folder. I have imported several GB's and it has not crashed since.

In the past - on similar threads - folks have suggested (a) opening in Safe Mode. (b) Creating a new Guest User account. (you created a new (renamed) Admin Account. Both prevent Login or startup items from loading, amoung other self-installed options - I think ???   What other things happened?  Would you check to see if your startup items changed, etc.? How about posting any NEW Console messages that were created when you created this new account? Would you mind looking at your activity monitor and post what is now different, etc.?

In other words - HOW did what you did solve your specific problem?  How do you think that your problem originated?

I'd really appreciate any input here aside from your opinions about the dynamics of this user to user forum - I just don't care about that part, sorry.

I am glad that you solved your problem, please share how.

    Cheers!
