Q: Since updating, my Apple Remote Desktop 3.7 is not working properly.

Since updating to 3.7, my Apple Remote Desktop Admin is not working properly.

Prior to the update, everthing was working correctly.

Since the update, workstations are not showing up in the Scanner, some workstations are flickering between Available & Offline, others are showing as Access Denied.   I have updated all of the clients to the appropriate ARD clients.

What is going on with this version?

Can you update this forum in a few days to let us know if this resolved your issue? Thanks.

    Hi,

I just wanted to confirm that you are running ARD admin client 3.6.1 on Mountain Lion  and are successfully connecting/controlling ARD 3.7.x clients on Mavericks?  Is that correct?

As an admin, will ARD 3.6.1 run on Mavericks and successfully connect to 3.7.x clients?

    Thanks for the clarification.

    RH

    Mattso:

OS X 10.9 must have 3.7 in both admin/client. I have tried to downgrade, some things works but it's worse than 3.7.1 so don't bother.

3.6 admin is beautiful to 3.7 clients. Just make sure to not go to 10.9 on your management computer and have your clients updated if you want and let them have every update. Then make sure to avoid the ARD update yourself.

Thanks!  It's been working great on a management computer at 10.8.3.   Does anyone know if it would work in 10.8.5?  I have a co-worker that is at that version and I'm telling him to give it a try.

    Hopefully, 3.7.2 will release soon.

I'm an admin running 10.9.1 with Lion, ML, & Mav clients all running 3.7.1.

I had to trash my containers and everything started working again. No more jumping IPs and disappearing clients.

So i can control and observe again. but I can no longer run reports or install packages to multiple machines. I have to install packages to one client at a time.

So better than before, but it still is horrible.

Any idea on when 3.7.2 will be released?

So two weeks later, ARD seems a bit more stable. Not as great as it used to be before the updates (specially when attempting a task on multiple clients), but much better than two weeks ago.

I've had a couple of people contact me regarding the script I posted...

It's not an AppleScript, it's a bash shell script that you would run in Terminal. You can copy the contents to a text file and save it as a .sh or .command file and then drop it on Terminal to run it.

You may need to make it executable first with

chmod a+x <<drag script here to get the pathname>>

Also, as a convenience I've posted it as a gist if that makes it easier to download:

    https://gist.github.com/bryanzak/9065400

Hope this helps. I've been using it now every week, as have a dozen or so colleagues at work, and it's made ARD 3.7.1 useable.

Bryan...this is fantastic.  Thank you so much!  I packaged it up into an Automator app that will also relaunch ARD once the script is done.  Works perfectly.

Also, FWIW...I've had a case open w/Apple enterprise support for almost 2 months now and haven't heard a peep from them.

I've been having this same issue with my 150+ clients on my network. Worked fine until 3.7., now flickering and completely unreliable. Exactly what you all have been seeing.

I have actually been back and forth with Apple Senior Support about this for weeks now, providing them with a full system scan, ARD logs, and testing different DNS servers. They said this issue is known, has high visibility, and is being addressed by Engineering. I can only assume we'll see an ARD update in the (near?) future with a fix, or perhaps it's an OS-level update and that's what's holding the whole thing up. I sent them an email this AM expressing my disappointment with the slowness of this fix - next stop might be trying to go up the management chain...

In any event, they are aware and have data. In the meantime, I may get desperate enough to try Bryan's script, which sounds effective (thanks Bryan). Not having ARD for my daily management has meant that my clients are degrading daily as their software ages and I can't remotely control them or issue commands reliably. Major ARD fail.

After giving a less than stellar review in the App Store, I was contacted by Apple Support asking if I would be willing to work with their support engineers.  I responded immediately with 'absolutely!!'.  They told me someone would be in touch with me within 3 business days.  That was close to 2 months ago and I haven't heard from them.  If they would put it back the way it was in 3.6, I would be happy.  This really is dragging on far longer than it should.

Wow, this bash works, fixed up my ARD nicely. Thanks so much, Brian! I have no idea why Apple is taking so long to fix this, clearly it can be done.

Out of curiosity - did 10.9.2 fix the ARD issue? I was assuming it would.
