Q: MacBook Pro (Mac OS 10.9.1 ) SHUTS DOWN/RESTARTS

As of recently I've had a very serious problem with my MacBook Pro when I've been using Final Cut Pro X. I'm using the computer normally while all of a sudden the screen goes dark and the computer seems to shut down completely Eventhough I can still hear the disk spinning, the fans running and the keyboard is still lit. The computer then restarts, turns back on and tells me the computer restarted because of a problem.

 

  • The first time it happened was today, Feb. 11/2014, close to 5PM. When the machine restarted it worked perfectly afterwards.
  • The second time it happened was today Feb. 11/2014 close to 9PM and it shut down/restarted in the same way I described above.
  • In both cases I was using Final Cut Pro X (10.1)

 

Could somebody please help me? Is my computer dying?

    Sounds like you have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try.

    What you can do to use it is download gfxstatus from http:gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel. That won't fix it, but it'll likely reduce the number of panics, though your graphics will be slower.

    The crash dump indicates a GPU issue.

    If it has been three years since your date of purchase then you are past the date covered by the recall but sometimes they honor it anyway.

     

    Some people have reported that downgrading from Mavericks to the previous OS made the problem go away.  Disabling automatic graphics switching (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4110) can sometimes bypass the problem.  You can also try downloading gfxstatus and set the video to Intel.  http://gfx.io

    The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test"). Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.  Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.

    Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
