Have just received by email a PDF from my power supplier. It will open and display normally on-screen with Acrobat, NeoOffice, Safari, GraphicConverter and, of course, Preview. However, when I print a hard copy from Preview it is totally garbled although Acrobat and all of the others print it out correctly.

Even Preview's "Print preview", if you get my meaning, is totally garbled. The overall layout of the document is correct but there are innumerable 'non-alphabetic' characters such as - ' $ / > % # @ ( ? interspersed with numerals. Any ideas?

What kind of printer are you using?

Firstly, this ONLY happens with this one specific PDF file from our power utility. It does, however, happen consistently with this file with both a Canon IP2702 Inkjet Printer and a Brother HL-2030 Mono Laser Printer. The on-screen Printer Preview PDF shows virtually the same image as gets printed out.

Linc. Davis refers to "resetting" the printing system. This presumably means deleting the two printer config. items listed in the Printers & Scanners Preference pane and re-installing?

I had the same issue with one specific PDF only.. I'm using ab HP printer.  I cannot remember how I fixed it but I remember I had to make a setting change in Acrobat reader for it to print correctly but I cannot remember what that was.  I think you can google the issue and it will tell you what setting that is.  It has nothing to do with Mavericks.

Having googled the issue the problems all seem to have been when printing the PDF via Acrobat. This file prints fne from Acrobat - no problems - it's when I print from Preview!

Linc was giving you a link to go to...

For some reason the link wasn't actually showing as a link which is why I didn't follow it. It's showing now and I've viewed it and reset the Printer Preferencesfor both printers, laser and inkjet. Unfortunately, no difference, my Preview (v7.0) still totally messes up that one particular PDF but Acrobat prints it out correctly.

I've just tried printing the PDF on my wife's little iBook (mid-2005 G4 - OS 10.5.8 - Preview v4.2) and, sharing my Brother HL-2030/Canon iP2702, it prints correctly without any problems. So, my copy of Preview?

Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.

Hold down the option key and select Go Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:

    • Containers/com.apple.Preview
    • Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
    • Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
    • Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState

Log out and log back in. Launch the application and test.

All four items existed and were duly deleted, logged out and back in, launched Preview and viewed the PDF. Displays directly on screen OK - as it always has done.

From the Print dialogue went to "Open PDF in Preview" - still the same problem shown on screen.

From the Print dialogue went to "Saved as a PDF" to the Desktop - the resultant PDF shows the same problem on screen.

Directly print a hard copy - the same problem.

It's a corrupt or incompatible file. Some PDF's don't work with the built-in rendering engine.
