What is it you are trying to accomplish? You can connect the devices via Bluetooth only to use Personal Hotspot except for a very few third-party apps that allow shared game play. If you're referring to AirDrop for file transfer, that isn't supported on an iPhone 4.

Just for clarity's sake, there is no "iPad 5". If you're referring to the iPad Air, it's best to use that name since that's how people will know it and how it will turn up in a search.

    Regards.

What are you wishing to do once connected.

As varjak pointed out, the only way to pair them together is through personal hotspot, which shares the internet connection from one device to the other.

Personal Hotspot requires cellular capability. If the iPad does not have this then it cannot share its internet and as such cannot pair with the Phone. So the iPhone won't be able to see it.  But the iPad will see the iPhone.

What is the ultimate goal of this pairing?  File transfer is not supported. except through AirDrop.

You don't (and can't) connect the devices directly to each other to do that. You sync bookmarks, notes, etc. in an iBooks book via iCloud:

    Ok!

    Guess that resolves my issues.

    Thank you!
