Q: My iphone 5 suddenly died.

My iphone 5 suddenly died. It will not turn on when I plug it in. It was working well the night before and nothing happened to it over night.  The battery was charged.

Thank you RJM.  My iphone 5S suddenly died for no reason and I tried your suggestion of:

    • Toggle the "silent button" above the volume rocker back and forth 2 times
    • Press the home button and also the sleep button at the same time. the apple logo will appear right after.

It work!! Thank you, thank you for posting this

My iphone 5 died...battery was acting a little funny, but wasn't consistent.

Was working fine, sitting on the counter overnight and just stopped working the next day. Won't charge or power up, reset doesn't do anything. Took it to the Apple store, they couldn't get it to power up with a different battery or with no battery, they didn't know what was wrong with it, didn't see any corrosion or water damage.

Warranty ended Jan 2. This is the first out of warranty failure for an iphone, can't believe it's 20 days after and there's no grace period. This blows.

Tried the toggle trick also just for the heck of it, no dice.

Thanks very much RJM! My iPhone 5S died this morning in just the same way - I'd tried pressing all the buttons in a normal way, holding the on off switch for a while etc. and was beginning to think it was dead as a dormouse!

But your trick of toggling the silent switch a couple of time, then pressing home and sleep together worked fine for me. I'd set the "This solved it" button against your entry - but I don't know how to do that - I guess it's up to a moderator to decide whether that's appropriate?

N.B. IOS version is 7.04.  Apologies for briefly saying the version was 7.0.5 - I got that from a pending update message - it's 7.0.4 build 11B554a.

I'll try upgrading to 7.0.5 now and see what happens!

    Thanks very much again!

Only the member making the original post in a thread can mark a response as Helpful or Solved. So posting a response to a followup post can't earn credit. Which doesn't stop people from attempting to be helpful, even if they don't get credit.

I've rebooted so many times holding HOME/SLEEP at the same time. My phone still continues to shut off then turn back on. No apps are open. This has been happening all day long.  Battery is 41%.  Earlier today is died completely. While charging, apple logo flashed on/off.  After 3 hours, did the hold/sleep which this time it took me to Itunes plug in display. Rebooted again, the phone turned on with 3%charge.

Same here.  Exact same issue.  I have an appt with Apple. Still under warranty.  This is SO frustrating, especially to see so many ppl experiencing the same issue.

Genius bar people in 2 minutes decided and tersely announced that the phone is dead and and since this phone is 370 days old (not within 365 days) you are not covered under warranty and you have to dole out 270 bucks to get a "new" one. I was told that this "new" phone has 90 days warranty but if you pay $ 550 you get 1 year warranty. What a scheme. I was told Apple never refurbishes and sell the phone as new but when asked if it is new why do I get only 90 days warranty and not 365 days. Explanation was hilarious- for additinonal $280 you will get full year warranty. I am very surprised and disappointed with all that has happened in last 1 week and did not expected this from company like Apple

My iPhone died when installing iOS 7.0.6.  I tried the solutions you've suggested i.e. holding the home and sleep buttons simultaneously after first toggling the mute button a couple of times.  It hasn't worked.

My new iPhone 5s is still dead.

Unfortunately, I was unaware that back-up is not automatic every time I connect the iPhone to my Macbook Pro.

If it is at all possible to restore my iPhone I stand to lose a few months of data.

At this stage I do not know whether my four-month-old iPhone is broken beyond repair.

I see that others online have had the same problem when installing iOS 7.0.6.  I am stunned that Apple can release software with such disastrous consequences for their own devices.

I naively trusted Apple sufficiently to install their upgrade without first ensuring that I had a back-up.

Do not PRESS the SLEEP and HOME buttons; HOLD them at the same time until something happens. If nothing happens after holding for at least 30 SECONDS charge for 30 minutes with the wall charger and try again. If still nothing happens your phone is broken.
