There are many. You need to discard them one by one by removing them from the system. You can't use multiple apps because they go to sleep, this causes the freezing too...
If you have cloud drives , remove them. If you have chrome anything, remove it. If you hav anything microsoft even a mouse, remove it. If you have bootcamp, remove it. If you have any apps that are not yet compatible with mavericks, remove them.
If you have a guest account or user account , disable it, remove them.
Get the picture ? The cure is worse than the disease. And after removing them there is still no guarantee this will work.
Mavericks is too different for some older systems. It can require more than 16 G of ram to work like the old systems.

Feb 10, 2014 4:53 AM in response to applezenby JasperMoonstone,Hi Everyone, I was experiancing the same issues with finder hangging/ freezing, I tried all the suggested fixes, deleting prefs etc,
As there was a lot of mention that google drive was an issue and like me countless others have said they do not use google drive, it got me thinking about what I do use that is similer!
I have Synology Cloud Station running on my machine, as soon as I pause syncing finder behaves as it should, and start syncing again, finder starts to hang and scrolling in any finder window is slow and buggy.
hope that helps someone

Jasper,
Thank you so much for this post! I was experiensing Finder freezes, when resizing windows or trying to move or copy a file. I turned off the Synology CloudStattion and everything is fine now.
I'll report this bug to Synology.
Thank you very, very much!

Feb 14, 2014 6:41 AM in response to Yegorby Mini-Mac,There's already a long thread about this issue, however Synology has yet to address it. I believe SMB2 is at issue here and others without Cloud Station. I did submit a support ticket to Synology to only get the reply that they cannot replicate the issue (weird).
Yegor, please submit your support ticket. The more that do will raise more supprt.
Here's the Synology thread http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=194&t=80301

Aug 25, 2014 2:08 AM in response to applezenby anigmbpr,I started having issues with Finder crashing repeatedly after a reboot. I do not have google drive app installed. The only way to resolve it was to Go to Force Quit in the apple menu and then try and relaunch Finder between crashes. This showed up an error box "The last time you opened Finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to open its windows again? If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself." Clicking on Don't Reopen would fix the Finder crashing repeatedly. However, after the reboot the same would happen.
I tried resolving it by deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.finder.saveState folders as instructed in several other forums. However even that didn't work.
What worked was the solution mentioned on this page - https://support.filetransporter.com/article/AA-00398
Solution
This occurs due to an issue with the dynamic linker, a system-level mechanism which OS X uses to help applications launch more quickly. To resolve this issue, you need to use the command line to reset the dynamic linker cache. You must be either the computer's owner or a user who has been given administrative rights; restricted users cannot perform these steps.- If you have not already, click the Transporter menu bar item and choose More options > Quit.
- Cick the Finder icon in the Dock.
- From the Go menu, choose Utilities.
- Open the Terminal app.
- Type: sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
- Press Return.
- When prompted, enter your OS X user password, and press Return.

- Wait until the text prompt returns, at which point the process will be complete.
- Restart the computer.
Hope this helps the next person with this pesky problem.

Oct 10, 2014 10:19 AM in response to applezenby mirooo,To fix the problem, you need to start Console and check what program finder is conflicting.
For me it was Citrix Receiver. I quit this program and the problem was solved.
