The late 2009 iMacs can only take up to 16 GBs of RAM, max. and the RAM must be installed in matched pairs.
The RAM slots in those models can only recognize 4 GB RAM modules as the largest size module.
Plus, Macs are extremely picky about the type and specs of the RAM they must use.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Stay away from PNY, Corsair and Kingston RAM or any other "bargain" or "value" RAM.
