Q: I get as far as step 5 and then all I get is flashing amber.
I plugged in the power supply for the time capsule and the Ethernet cable coming from my router.
I filled in the network name, base station name and password and clicked on next.
Then it asks me to turn off my router for a few minutes, which I did. So after 2 minutes I turn my router back on and click on next.
Then it finishes the setup and I'm back to the first screen. This time it shows the newly created time capsule network but flashing amber with 4 error messages.

OK, thanks let's start over again and see if things will go as they are supposed to go.
Disconnect any cables that might be connected to the TC, but leave the TC powered on.
With the Time Capsule powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the device firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the TC to restart to a slow, blinking amber light. The reset button is just to the right of the AC power cord socket.
Connect the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> Ethernet ports on the Netgear router to the WAN "O" port on the TC
Open up AirPort Utility, click on Other WiFi Devices, then click on Time Capsule xxxxx.
The utility will open and take a minute to analyze things, then suggest the Time Capsule be configured to create a network. The window should look exactly like this, except you will see a Time Capsule icon:
Enter a simple, short name that you want to call the wireless network and name the Time Capsule. Then enter a password that you will use to both access the settings on the Time Capsule and also connect to the wireless network. Click Next.
After another minute, you should see an indication of Setup Complete. Click Done. You should have a green light on the TC now, and you should be able to connect to the TC wireless network by selecting the network name and entering the password.
