I struggled with this annoying problem for a long time.  The only solution that worked for me was to create and migrate to a new account.  I had to copy all my files over and reconfigure iCloud in the new account.  But it worked.

The problem has recurred only once for me since changing the TLS certificate.

Check to make sure that your apple id that you are using for all your divices is the same apple id. ie all .mac or .me or .icloud. For some reason when I upgraded to mavericks my machine grabed a different apple id or i mistakenly entered a different one. Soon as I switched it to what my other divices had, no more problems. Mail did not hang and was much quicker and so was my whole computer ingeneral. Hope this helps someone else.

I have had Mavericks since December & had no problems with mail.  Only just now I can't access Mail, can't force close it & can't shut down my computer.

    thanks

This happens to me repetatedly - nearly every time I try to quit Mail. Might be a coincidence, but I've found that if I close the window (click on X in upper left corner of app) and then quit with the file menu or cmd-q, Mail quits immediately. So far, I haven't had to force quit if I do it that way. HTH

I had this problem too.  I had a POP account and an IMAP account set to check the mail every minute.  As soon as I got rid of my IMAP account everything started working correctly.

I have tried all recommended solutions to this issue. See, e.g., https://discussions.apple.com/message/24005086#24005086#24005086

All provided temporary relief, only to have the issue reemerge within a few minutes or hours.

BGLarkin's solution above (close Mail window, then Quit) is the only solution that seems to have staying power for me. Klunky workaround for sure, but so far it's working.

Sigh. Spoke too soon. BGLarkin's suggestion worked for a day, and then the symptom returned even after closing the Mail window. Namely, Mail will not quit, and requires a Force Quit.

    You're right on!

My iCloud account was not pointing to my iClound account. Also folks ought to log into their iCloud accounts in a browser and go to Manage iCloud account and be sure all your alias emails are listed.

I also face the same issue and those who teach me how to force quit should know that " I know how to force quit apps" I want mail to quit without having to force quit it, how can you guys come up with such silly solutions? that is not the solution that is telling me problem cannot be fixed so use force quit, well it is very sad actually because I have had this issue since I used Tiger then Leopard, snow leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion and now Mavericks, dont get the wrong idea it is not the same MAC, I have almost used 3 different Mac's and all have faced this issue about 90% of the time, well now I am getting very annoyed so I am actually thinking of switching to dying PC again, what an irony! but I am serious I am looking into MSI and Asus currently because of this annoyance, I will not stop using my iPad though, I totally love it.

I found in system preferences, Internet accounts, a facebook account, and a facebook jabber chat account. Once I disabled them, Mail now quits quickly, Your mileage may vary.

I have had this problem since the first days of Maverick, and it has persisted through all the upgrades. I've followed every instruction on every bulletin board; I've done complete clean reinstalls; I've deleted/disconnected all my iCloud and social media connections for days at a time; I've gone through the Library cleaning all sorts of things. STILL - one or twice a week, I'll hear email arrive on my phone and realize that my computer's email has stopped receiving. I'll quit - silly me, it's such an old habit - and find that Mail refuses to quit.

Of course, I'll then force-quit (as people have tiresomely suggested here as a solution. It's not a solution.)

Email is one of the core reasons for owning a computer. The fact that Apple has acknowledged, but neglected to address this critical bug for so many months is really discouraging for a long-time Apple user.

Funny, just installed Mavericks today and had this same problem. Never had a problem before. has to be with Mavericks. It bothers me that Apple has known about this for awhile and hasn't fixed it yet.

Force quit worked. Hope I don't have to do it everytime I open mail
