Q: Apple mail does not sync with gMail

Today my Apple Mail no longer provides me with my gMail in the inbox.

I can send mail to my gMail address and it shows in the Sent box ...but it never makes it to my Inbox.

If I log directly into Google Mail the email message is there.

This has always worked before.

Also, just now I downloaded and installed the Apple update for Mail ...which said it fixes some gMail account issues ..but I still have the problem.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Maybe go to preferences/display and change the first setting to show messages in a conversation which are only in the current folder?  Is there maybe some confusion in your settings between "Inbox" and "All Mail"?  I really have no idea . . .

Glad to see you found the switch to de-thread the messages, Donnie!

I'm not sure about the inbox thing, either. Could you make another folder and move those messages into it? Or you might want to look around the Postbox support pages—that's where I located the threaded conversation fix.

A friend of mine switched to iCloud email by having gmail forwarded, then downloading to Apple Mail. Guess he uses the appropriate gmail server to send responses from Apple Mail. I could see myself getting sloppy with that method. Has anyone here tried this? And/or used aliases or multiple iCloud email accounts? Perhaps this is a good temporary solution to keep syncing straight until/if the problem is solved? I’m resisting learning a new mail program if there’s a fix in sight.

This is working for me. Simple hack until Apple fixes the root cause.

Unacceptable. My Gmail accounts are offline the 80% of time.

I have had the same problem.  Sometimes my Apple Mail will only load some of the mail on Google.  After awhile, it will say I have 32 emails downloading, but only about 10 will appear.

I went into my mail on Google and read, then deleted an email that had a 12 meg file attached.  Once I did that, all of the rest of my email automatically loaded into my Apple Mail.

Could it be that large files clog up the exchange between Google and Apple Mail?

Here's a review of Airmail with some detail, screen-shots and (I believe) a fairly-unbiased approach:

Switching between Airmail and Postbox every few days, and hard to say which one I like better.  I can say this, if Airmail would let me sort by sender, I would like it more.  Also, Postbox seems slower on bringing down new mail than Airmail.  My phone and Airmail receive them about the same time, but my phone will acknowedgle the new message, and it could be quite a while before Postbox gets it.

I have written a little AppleScript that seems to fix the issues between Mail.app and GMail.

    Please give it a try:

Andre - Have nothing in that folder other than Stationery. Did you have anything else of interest in there?

It is a bizarre problem and makes mail.app almost unusable. I am finding that I need to keep my phone on my desk to check my email rather than use the computer right in front of me! I really hope Apple fixes this in the next update. If not I may abandon mail.app. Is Eudora still around?

    We wish . . .

There has been a robust discussion of alternative email apps in this thread.  There is a "version" of Eudora still around, but it's the Thunderbird-based email client with a Eudora-style overlay.

MailMate really deserves a serious look, and our early testing with PostBox is promising. BOTH of these apps seem to work quite well with our mix of IMAP servers - we have quite a few.

It's sad that Apple's own Mail.app is the one email client on Mavericks which really doesn't work!

Thank you to everyone who posted.  I have been patiently waiting since downloading Mavericks and subsequent update for a fix to be released in regards to gmail/mail functionality but I reached my limit.  The issues with mail not syncing with gmail on my laptop in a timely or consistent maner has cost me so much time and aggrevation.  After responding once again to a legnthy work email via my phone while my laptop sat idly by in front of me, I realized I could not wait anymore.  I downloaded Airmail for $1.99 and I was in business within minutes.  Minutes--I don't know what I was waiting for--I had faith in you, Mac.

No longer will I sit waiting for gmail to sync or my mailboxes to load.  I was having serious flashbacks of my PC years and actually longed for Outlook in some moments of weakness.

I will say, I don't usually like change, but Airmail is gorgeous and more eye appealing than mail with what appears to be all the same functionality.
