Q: 2010 macBook pro 15". Lagging and froze during last update.

Hi guys, 2 months ago I had my hinge replaced under warrenty because of a faulty glue joint. When I got the computer back I noticed a slight grinding in the body while runnung (hard drive?). It got better so I let it go, this morning I performed a software update and it froze during the validation process so I had to power off by holding the power button. I found a past tip that led me to find the folder with the update and I put the content of the folder in the trash. I did an update again and it said I was up to date.

I want to cure my lagging and freezing, need some help! as you can tell by my user name I am better with wood, not computers so please keep your recommendations in "newbie" terms. Thanks for your help!

OK,  I am on my other computer now! I found 3 files that were RIM BB, I put one of them in the trash, and now I get the eternal spinning wheel from ****. My whole computer is frozen. Ok, it is back. I am now going to delete the last file written RIMBBVS.kext.

What do you want me to do after that, another entrecheck?

That should have gotten rid of most things, with the exception of the null disk, which I'm not familiar with. If no one else has a better idea, I'd say do a clean install. Like I said though, copy your drive to an  external or you'll lose everything. I have to head out for a bit, I'll check on you later.

Thanks again RobRz for your patience, I will delete the other RIM files. I will then restart and do another entrecheck and post the results. I will then do a backup of the computer on my external hard drive. If you are able to  later I would like to do a clean install (if you can talk me through it).

looking at the entrecheck explanation it says that there should be no 3rd party applications in my problem system launch Daemons, should I be trying to delete that one too? Where wold that one be found?

Since I deleted the Blackberry folders in the root of the hard drive my computer has been running worse than before. It has been freezing frequently. I was able to copy my iPhoto library to my enternal hard drive. At the beginning of the transfer the computer froze so much that it took over 10 minutes to download 350 mb of information (of a total 63 GB) and it estimated over 60 hours to download. I let it go and it finally started again and it took approx 75-80 minutes to download all the pictures. Something is going on and I don't know what! Should I try and do a clean install of OS, i found my original disks.

There's no reason that uninstalling the Blackberry stuff should have hurt anything. A clean install might be the best bet at this point. Let's try one other thing first. Go to System Preferences / Users & Groups. Create a new user with admin rights, the reboot. Log in as the new user and see if things are better.

If you want to get rid of that last launch daemon, it's in a different spot. Start in your Home folder then /Library/LaunchDaemons

I created a new account with admin rights. I will monitor and see if I get the beach ball or freeze. Can you please explain how to use the activity monitor and how it can help me find out where the freeze is. Do I keep this running on my home page while I am browsing the web?

The Activity Monitor is in Applications / Utilities. Start it up, click the CPU tab at the top, then click on the CPU % heading so that the little triangle points down. That makes it sort in descending order, so that the processes using the most CPU are at the top of the list.

Just start it up and let it run all the time for now. If you hit a slowdown, take a look and see what's using the most CPU.

Thanks RobRz, I will do that for a few days and see what it shows. As for your suggestion to trash that last launch daemon I can't find it!  I did finder, HD, library, daemons (it is all empty from before) then I did finder, home, library, and there is NO daemons folder.

Sorry, I sent you to the wrong place. It'd be in Mac HD /System/Library/LaunchAgents.

Let's see what happens with a different user account.

what "processes" should I have the activity monitor on? It is presently on "my processes", does it matter?

So next time it freezes will I NOT be able to get over to that screen as the computer screen will be frozen, is there a way to "cheat" to get to that screen to see what is still working?
