Q: Email in Mavericks Apple Mail is blank and/or missing.

I've been having a problem with Apple Mail 7.0 ever since I upgraded to Mavericks OS X 10.9.

There are random whole mail folders and individual emails inside remaining folders which have disappeared.

Thinking I accidently deleted them, I went through time machine and restored the missing folders and missing emails. Then I placed the missing items back into the main folder structure and missing individual emails into the original folders.

Some of those emails display just fine, but once you move them, only the header displays and the body of the email is blank.

I did a rebuild of each folder. That changed nothing.

I deleted the envelope index and let the program build it again (as seen in other posting). That changed nothing.

Since the blank and/or missing individual emails do exist in the Library, I used import mailboxes to get them into Apple Mail again. You see them, you can click on them, but as soon as you move them from one folder to another, the same thing happens -- they become blank and/or disappear.

Any ideas on what to try next?

Same issue regarding blank E-Mail messages here.

The from/to/subject header is displayed correctly. The message content is just blank.

This happens to me several times a day.

For me it helps, to shut down Mail completely and just restart it.

Mail messages then are displayed correctly.

Anyway, this is a very annoying problem. It started after the update to Mavericks 10.9.

I don't want to be a beta-tester and play around with reindexing or deleting any envelope files, as this also happens to emails I just received.

Not acceptibale for me. Will open a bug report at apple now!

I agree to open a bug report at Apple. I examined the problem further after my last posting (I am a scientist). The blanking appears to happen when Apple Mail is interacting with a Microsoft Exchange server. I have four mail accounts (apple cloud, a private using IMAP and two business, using Microsoft Exchange). Three of them do not cause a problem, it is the one (university based) that I use most that causes a problem, and affects only messages that are filtered into their designated mailboxes on my local computer. As far as I can see, there is a problem how Apple Mail interacts with Microsoft Exchange, moreover, it is not a generic problem (with the other Microsoft Exchange server I have no problem), but I am definitely clueless about the cause. In my case the message is completely blank, with only information about the sender, subject and date and time. A reply leaves all header lines blank.

    Hello,

I opened a bug report yesterday and posted a link to this thread, so that Apple gets more insight.

I just wanted to give some feedback about the MS Exchange incompatibility aarts_jos mentioned in his last post.

I'm using a exchange account as well. I've three IMAP accounts and one MS Exchange account configured in my Mail programm.

So it sounds quite plausible, that the MS Exchange connection might be the cause of the issue. Will investigate closer and report back.

    Greetings,

    FS

Same happened to me. Yesterday, I upgraded to Mavericks. After opening Mac Mail I noticed that my folder CLIENTS (the most important to me) was empty (it used to have many subfolders and lot of emails). I was about to restore my email folders from my Time Machine, when I decided first to take a look to the hard disk folder where the mailboxes are stored.

Since this folder is hidden by OSX, you have to do this: Open a Finder window and from the Finder menu, click on Go, and then Go To Folder.

    Type   ~<your user name>/Library/Mail/V2/

Then go to the Mailboxes folder.

The problem was that a new 'CLIENTS' mailbox was created and the original one renamed to 'CLIENTS-2' (who knows why!).

After nenaming 'CLIENTS' to 'CLIENTS-3' and 'CLIENTS-2' to 'CLIENTS', I launched Mail and all my emails and subfolders were back.

    Hope this helps somebody.

I have the same problem, but I don't use, nor ever have used, a MS Exchange account. Maybe the incoming mail is (partly) from MS Exchange users, but mail from the same persons appears fine in other (sub)mailboxes, so it might be a factor, but not the only one.

    Any news about this yet?

I only have the ___-2.mbox folder, not the original any more. If I rename it to the original name, the messages are completely gone in mail.

Likewise, I only have the ___-2.mbox folder, not the original. If I rename it to the original name after backing up the _2 folder nothing happens. I've also deleted the envelope files and rebuilt the mailbox.

This started after upgrading to Mavericks a while back. So far it's only happening to one folder but an important one.

I have an issue where folders containing email weren't showing up — even if search results showed the email. I followed the instructions to "delete any file that begins with “Envelope Index,” such as Envelope Index or Envelope Index-shm." and reopen Mail, and the folders are back.

However, tonight I archived two messages that were flagged. They are supposed to show up in the smart folder with flagged messages, however, they are nowhere to be found, not in any folder and not through any search. Anyone else have this problem?

Ok what worked for me: If in Mail go to File 'Import Mailboxes'. It opens a dialog to find the mailboxes to import. I went to my current V2 mail folder, clicked 'Continue'. It opened a tiny dialog box practically listing all your mail by mailbox titles. I hit the column header to uncheck all (I only wanted one mailbox for now) then scrolled down to the mailbox with the blank email and started checking all the boxes for that mailbox. Then hit 'Import' and Wallah all the mail came in to a Mailbox folder called 'Import'. Messages were no longer blank.

    Hi,

I have exactly the same issue. I bought a Mac 5 days ago and imported all my mail into Mac Mail from MS mail, via Thunderbird. I noticed one or two mails where the mail header was visible but the body was invisible, even when double clicking on the mail. Some times they came back. Today i noticed this happen to all the email i had received today.

I then rebuilt the mail as suggested on another forum and presto, ALL my mails are now ghosts, ALL of them.

I placed a lot of original mails in "on my Mac" archive folders. These are not affected.

I too get some limited sucess by renaming the folders, as receommended by BerndNW, but as soon as a new email comes in the system adds a whole new folder and all the new emails are blank

    Any further suggestions out there?

I fixed it by deleting the mailbox and re-importing it from a backup. Havn't found any 'broken' mailboxes so far, but then again, I don't use my mail archive very intense.

    Thanks Leon,

I tried this yesterday, but I found I  couldnt completely delete the mailbox, and when I re imported all the mail, it was visible right up till a new mail csme in , then the new file was created again and all the mails were then blank all over again.

I think, when i get a chance i will have to ring apple support and see what they can do!

I must add, that I might have deleted the mailbox via the Finder (it's been a while, I'm not sure). Please keep us posted about your findings, OK?
