Q: Apple mail does not sync with gMail

Today my Apple Mail no longer provides me with my gMail in the inbox.

I can send mail to my gMail address and it shows in the Sent box ...but it never makes it to my Inbox.

If I log directly into Google Mail the email message is there.

This has always worked before.

Also, just now I downloaded and installed the Apple update for Mail ...which said it fixes some gMail account issues ..but I still have the problem.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Could not agree more. The level of disappointment and frustration is at a all new level. Never felt this way about any Apple or Mac product. Long for the days when Apple was reputable and respected.

And consider (after my Gmail accouts are offline than online than offline again) that I cannot Shut Down too because of Mail.

It's only $1.99, and worth it.

I have now used several other clients including Airmail, Post Box, and Mail Pilot.  PostBox has some nice features, but I still find myself going back to Airmail. $1.99 and it just works.  I think I paid $9.99 for PostBox,so still not expensive.

OK, thanks. Considering it's less than my green tea latte at Starbucks I might as well just get it!

The question is: why I have to install a thirdh part program for reading my emails? It sounds like a "windows solution".

We are in 2014 an Apple is considered the most advanced computer's company. It is possibile having these type a problems?

It is a good question.  Personally, I guess I have come to realize that Apple is really indiffernt to these problems (WiFi, sleep issues, Mail).  We can rant all we want, but Apple has our money, and that seems to be their only motivation.  They are getting their butts kicked from Samsung right now, so maybe that is their distraction, or a futher indication that they are relying on those addicted to all things Apple to continue to carry them.

Even the most loyal will realize before long that their loyalty is going unrewarded, and taken for granted.

What gets me is that IMAP is not difficult to impliment, and an email program really doesn't need to do much beyond checking and sending email. You can write a perl script in about 5 minutes to check your gmail, so why can't Apple with its thousands of programmers seem to figure this problem out? (I realize that google does some odd things with IMAP implimentation, but nothing so odd as to break the protocol itself.)

Does Airmail play nicely with saved folders on the local hard drive? I have tons of old emails in nested folders that are carryovers from the days of POP that I still occasionally need access to.

Unfortunately the operating systems and all the additional tools have become more and more complicated.  It isn't as simple as saying that they have lost their shine.  They need to innovate because we expect them to.  Being innovative generally means being at the head of the curve and with that you can expect some pain.  Just remember what it was like when your devices were not all in sync with your computer.  Remember how you used to have to plug everything in all the time.  How about when you had to have some monster of a laptop to work away from home or the office (I am writing this from my iPad).

    Samsung

    ----------

Companies like Samsung choose to rip off other companies innovation rather than doing their own.  They don't have their own OS, they use Googles Android so how innovative do they need to be.  Note also that Samsung is being sued in other business areas for ripping off other technologies, not just in the mobile arena.

    Mail Oddness

    ---------------

Now for the really interesting part and back to the topic at hand.  I have multiple email accounts for personal and business uses.  One, like everyone else here, is a Gmail account, another hosted by an ISP, and another that is for a company I own and is hosted by Google.  With all the issues you would expect the first and the third account to have the same problems right?  They are both hosted by, and connected to gmail, Google.  Here is the strange part though.  The third one works perfectly where as the first has all the problems that everyone else here has.  The only difference between the two, as I can understand it, is the domain name at the end of the address.

I switched to Airmail yesterday and one of my biggest hesitations was the folders and subfolders I have.  It was a seemless switch.  Not only were all the folders visible immediately but I did not have to wait for them to "populate" with the stored emails which has been an issue since upgrading to Mavericks in mail.  I was wasting so much of my time waiting for mail to respond and load emails; I regret not looking for a different solution sooner.

SchniederIS4MAC (your handle makes a statement of bias right up front), I don't disagree about the business practices of Samsung.  I have a Samsung G4 and my wife has an iPhone 4s.  I will keep my G4 for sure.  All the tech companies are being sued by someone for something, including Samsung and Apple (and HP, and Dell, and IBM, ....).

Whether we like the Samsung 'model' or not (is 'ripping off' a model?  ), it has to be a distraction for Apple and they need to do something constructive about it - something that will stop the trend and lead consumers back.  I bought an iMAC for my son about 6-7 years ago, but I never used it.  I continued to use windows, mostly because of affordability.  I now have a MBA 13" and love it, and never want to go back to Windows.  But with all the extra $, I do expect a company to at least acknowledge that there are issues.  Apple has not been that compnay.
