The first thing I might suggest is to delete the preference file com.apple.FontBook.plist.
It should be found in the folder "username"/Library/Preferences/
Once it's deleted, restart Fontbook and see if it isn't more responsive.

I wish... there'd be a menu command to trash pref files for every applications. -

Duplicate fonts can cause slowdowns of your system, as well as odd system behaviour.
If you haven't already done so, you might want to highlight any duplicate fonts and do an Edit>Resolve Duplicates for each of them (one at a time).
Also, it may be useful to do a Repair Permissions from your Disk Utility (should be located in the Utilities Folder). That may help your system run a little more predictably.
