Q: Library Size, Platform and Chasing My Tail

I'm more than a bit frustrated with my photo management.  I have had multiple libraries in iPhoto and have now combined them into a large library in Aperture.

I have a lot of pics. from family and children events, etc.  I'd estimate around 30k.

I don't do too many projects but i do find I am bringing up iPhoto more frequently b/c the change over to Aperture never seemed to matter much and since I barely do anything, my brain hasn't switched over to the subtle (and language) differences...I download pics from my camera or I access something from the photo stream.  My computer crashes every few days after I have used one of the photo apps.

I understand I can turn these into smaller libraries (not sure that will actually solve the issues) but WHHHHHHYYYYY should I really have to?  I would have thought that after all this time, hardware and explosive digital growth, Apple would have smoothed this out.

If I recall, only my active library is the one that is accessed from my AppleTV, my iTunes syncing, etc.  In other words, splitting into multiple libraries brings additional complications in limiting my Apple platform experience.

I am open to a third party app...but I am skeptical to how that will affect my access to pics via my devices, iTunes, et al.

As I try to explore these issues on line, I see a lot of ideas but I have had difficulty finding ideas or answers that speak to these multiple criticisms.

So, no particular question but some griping that I am hoping someone might have some insights for me that might make my digital life easier.

Thanks!!!

    Holy cow!

I guess I wanted insight and discussion!

So, I get where everyone is coming from and it is clear there doesn't seem to be a simple solution.  Each direction appears to have its relative risks, rewards, costs and time usage...which is where I felt I started.

In a sense, I feel like the discussion solved one of my problems: no clear answer and confusion at this stage is normal.

For the record, I did indeed move to a Mac to simplify my Windows existence and I do find I am care-taking too much.  I am deeply suspicious of 3rd party fix-it software but get that not each is to be damned.  I am an enthusiastic user of Cocktail. My gut tells me I need a clean install and not use a TM backup and I think Andy fully appreciates what a pain in the @$$ that is and why I am so hesitant.  On the otherside, it IS an intermittent problem that doesn't crash on me when I am actively working.  Given the age of my computer I may just go through a best-efforts reload upon my next purchase.

FYI: My computer did not crash during this entire period.  I've had iPhoto up and closed a couple times during over the past several days.  Came home last night and saw it was still running and was surprised there had not been an issue.  I closed it, did a couple of things and went to bed.  When I arose this AM, the screen was black and it wouldn't wake.  Same old, same old.

You have already linked up with some of the best mineds on this forum, but let me add an important thought.

One of the great advantages of Aperture is that: You don't have to fix it all at once.

Repeat that mantra several times. Read Frank's various posts on the nomenclature of Aperture and how each organizing element works. Then select a small number of photos and arrange them the way you want. (Remember, you get date order for free so you don't have to spend a lot of time setting up date hierarchies. In my case, for example, geography is the highest level, dates come two levels down. Similarly, while you certainly can rename your files, not all of us find it necessary.

    Start small and go slowly.

Finally, a Core 2 Duo machine will be a bit challenged, but my 2006 MacBookPro with 2 GB of RAM still runs. Not fast, but it runs.

    Best wishes!

CleanMyMac and Gemini apps may help maintaining iPhoto libraries: CleanMyMac is not considering photo originals as a junk. It offers users who do not need those originals to slim their library a bit. Another our app, Gemini, allows to locate and clean the duplicates from the library

iPhoto needs the originals to work correctly, even, if the user thinks they are redundant. With the originals gone, the lossless workflow of iPhoto is broken and the iPhoto library inconsistent.

What I object to, is the way the scan results are reported by the program. "Clean My Mac" is calling the originals "useless service copy", very misleading to an unexperienced user, who does not know that the high resolution originals will be replaced by the previews of the edited versions and forever lost. The program does not even move the removed files to the Trash, but deletes them immediately.

I tried the Demo version on a test library and the result was an inconsistent iPhoto library and data loss. All photos with more than one version were suddenly sharing the preview of the last edited version as original file, even the original version, that should not be modified. For example:

    • To the right: an edited version with a vignette and the original, unmodified version.
    • To the left, the unmodified version revealed in the Finder.

The original of the unmodified version has now an original file with a vignette applied, as "Reveal in Finder" clearly shows:

And it is impossible to edit the original version any longer, because of the burned in vignette in the wrong original image file.  As soon as I try to edit this version, the vignette will be applied and cannot be undone, because of the wrong original master file.

I have done several tests like this with iPhoto 9.5.1. with always the same result - the program creates wrong version-original links, if several versions are sharing one original master file.

Only one of the versions can be edited correctly.

For the example above - the wrong original master in the Editor window showing the vignette from the other edited version, the thumbnail is still correct. This image cannot any longer be edited - it will always include the vignette.
