Connect the drive, and hold the option key while clicking the TM icon in the menu bar and select "Browse Other Backup Disks"

Just curious why you did not simply continue to use this?

    Hi

Whenever I have updraded my OS then I have used a new drive for backups, although in this case the Imac and Macbook have seperate TM drives for their respective back ups, I have a load of pictures on the imac TM drive and wondered if I could search and copy them over to the macbook, they would then be backed up onto that drive

If you mean why do I not continue to use the old imac, just because I love my Macbook the Imac is 5years old and we have downsized houses, the laptop is so handy and I can air play anything I want bigger onto the TV

    Okay.

As Tony suggested, you can simply browse other backups and restore items to your MacBook.
