That finction is only available in 10.7 or newer. On Mac OS X 10.5.8, you need to insert a Mac OS X install DVD and use the Option key, or to repair the internal drive when none is available, the Shift key.
You shouldn't perform an OS installation(other than an erase and install) before repairing the disk.

So I shouldn't even bother attempting to reinstall OS X until I've repaired the disk? Would you or someone be able to just tell me step by step what my course of action should be? I'm sorry to be a bit lost, I'm unfamiliar with apple products.
