I managed to install win 8 on a late 2008 macbook pro, then upgrade to 8.1. Runs fine except no sound and cant right click using pad. Get a bootcamp driver update message which takes me to bootcamp 5. When I try to install this says 64 bit not supported on this machine, but windows wouldnt let me install 32 bit. version. Tried bootcamp 4 but this also wont run. Tearing my hair out on this.
Stop tearing your hair out. Windows 8.1 is not yet supported (no Boot Camp drivers/Windows Support software).
And despite your assertion that your installation runs fine, I don't think "...no sound and cant right click using pad." indicates that the computer with Windows 8.1 is running fine.

Windows 8.1 now supported with Bootcamp.
Thanks for the update but this link only supports specific platforms. Bootcamp assistant will choose the right one. If you want to download it manually use the links from the page below which provide the correct version for your platform. See the section "Boot Camp requirements by Mac model".
Note: The links to version 5 on this page are not all the same download. It varies according to platform.
