What, if anything, is left inside the folders inside tempitunes?

    Duplicate removal

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.

In the Songs view use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the "duplicates" have been created and only if they were not imported at the same time as the "originals".  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.

Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

I would have about 6000 songs to earse.  This would take for ever.

Is there anything else I could besides duplicate the songs one by one?

Is there a way I can wipe out everything from itunes and start all over?

    do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Use my DeDuper script if don't want to do it by hand.

    I appreciate your help.

I do not understand how to use deduper.  What is the music source?  Where is the music source?  "before running select the Music Source in your library"

    Thanks again

I need some help with this deduper.  If possible could I have a step by step how to use deduper?

Another question:  Once I get rid of all my duplicate songs will my itunes work correctly off my external drive?

Again I always appreciate your help.

    1. Start by downloading the script if you haven't done so already. This is a direct download link to DeDuper that you can right-click on for download options: Save to your downloads folder, desktop or somewhere else you can find it easily when you want to use it.

    2. If it isn't already shown press CTRL+B to enable the menu bar.

    3. Hold down the SHIFT key and then from the menu bar select View > Show Exact Duplicate Items

You should get something like this. Click on the heading of the Album column if needed to change the sort order and use CTRL+J to enable artwork if desired.

      DeDupe1.png
Note there are 4 copies of the first track. In the second album only tracks 1 to 4 are duplicated which is why only those tracks from that album show up in this view

    4. To test how the script works select a sample of tracks rather than everything. In my case I'm going to select the Adele albums only by clicking on the first track, then scrolling to the last one, and shift-clicking that. This highlights all the songs between the two selections. Like this:

      DeDupe2.png

    5. Double-click on the script to run it. Because you've downloaded this script from the web you will probably get a warning message asking if you want to open it.

      DeDupe3.png
Obviously this is where you need to decide if you trust my advice. If you do click Open. If you want to prevent repeat warnings you can uncheck the box that says "Always ask..."

    6. Assuming you click Open you should now get a dialog box like this:

      DeDupe4.png
Review the text, cancel if the numbers don't agree with your intentions, otherwise click Yes.

    7. Depending on your settings for User Account Control and Internet Explorer you may get a progress bar displayed as the script evaluates the duplicates, otherwise you will just get the findings:

      DeDupe5.png

    8. Click Yes to remove the duplicates. When they have been removed you will get a results screen:

      DeDupe6.png
Note that all the duplicates of Adele's tracks have been removed, while the others remain.

    9. If you're happy the script does what is is supposed to press CTRL+A to select all the duplicate tracks and run it again.

Note it is worth doing the test on one or two albums first to get a feel for the script and also to determine if you get shown the progress bar. If not you need to be prepared for the script to take time processing the library with no feedback as to how it is getting on. Run time is probably a power relationship to library size, i.e double the size of the library and the script could take 4 times as long to run.

Once the library has been cleaned of the duplicates check it through before deleting what has been put in the recycle bin.

And yes, the aim as always is to get your library working smoothly from your external drive.

    ...

my question what do I do to get my music in my extranl drive to open when I click on itunes?  I have not deleted the duplicates.

I thought iTunes was opening with all the music?

You probably want iTunes open before you run the script. The script needs to talk to iTunes in order for it to work out which files are duplicates and process them so iTunes needs to be running at the time. If it isn't it is started automatically by the script.

From earlier in the thread... here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:

The main database for the library is the file iTunes Libary.itl - although you may not necessarily see the .itl extension as these are normally hidden. iTunes Library Extras.itdb and iTunes Library Genius.itdb are two supplementary files that support the iTunes LP/Extras and Genius features. The .xml file is provided for other software to examine to discover information about the library and sentinel is used by iTunes to tell if it crashed while it was updating the database and allows it to perform a consistency check when restarting.

With Windows you normally double-click on a file to open it. If you double-click an .itl file it will open iTunes, but not necessarily the file you clicked on. To switch iTunes between using one .itl file and another you must use the correct process. Click the icon that launches iTunes and immediately press and hold down SHIFT, keep holding shift until asked to choose or create a new library, click choose and then browse to the file you want to open.

If you're not certain which .itl file is actually being opened try the iTunesInfo script.

    f:\itunes\itunes medai

Is the itunes media folder suppose to go to drive f:

First. iTunes always opens the last library that it had opened unless the library database file is missing or you hold down shift when you start iTunes. If your library is visible when you close iTunes and you don't want to chose or create a different one next time you start iTunes DO NOT HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY.

Your library database file is supposed to be F:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl

Your library's media folder is supposed to be F:\iTunes\iTunes Media

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

If it is broke apply the right fix.

I have done what you have told me to do.  When I close out itunes and start Itunes again I get the following:

    I TUNES SOFTWARE AGREEMENT PAGE

I click on agree, but it keeps on coming when I start itunes.  What am I to do?

Another question: Do you have anything that does album artwork?

    Thanks again

Hmmm, I was thinking earlier that I missed something out of this statement...

iTunes always opens the last library that it had opened unless the library database file is missing or you hold down shift when you start iTunes, or there is a problem updating the iTunesPrefs.xml file...

Does the correct library appear once you accept the software agreement?

    Do you have McAfee antivirus?
