Even though a FireWire icon cannot be seen on the PowerBook G4 screen in this case, (with access to another appropriate Mac) you may want to try FireWire target disk mode to begin with:

Otherwise, it would be possible to open the PowerBook G4 and remove the hard drive (ifixit.com guides may be of help). A special USB adapter (for example, http://www.newertech.com/products/usb3_universaldriveadap.php) can be used to connect the now external hard drive to another Mac.
