Q: i cant retore my ipod 1 to like new again settings

so i just bought a used ipod 1st generation i believe its the 1st because it has no camera on it. however i bought it for my son to use since i have my ipad and hes always wanting to use it, i tried to factory reset it, it was turning on good before it did the reset, now the apple logo is frozen on the screen, i ran through the steps i found on here to where the usb cable pops up on the screen i did that, it brought up itunes and said ipod in recovery mode, so it says click the restore ipod button. then a box pops up and reads " the ipod "ipod" could not be restored. an unknown error occured (1).

and yes i have the lateset itunes update. like i said it was working just fine before just wanted it to be like new agian, any help will be very greatly appreciated , thank you
