Depends which Mac & what you're using it with or for, but Screen Sharing may work fine for you without a KVM.

I have a great 27 inch monitor that I want to keep using. Hope to use it and have the capacity to switch between it and a macbook pro.

You need to break that down, I do not understand "use Chicken of the VNC." Would I be going into screen sharing on my Mac using 10.4.11 and sharing that with the second computer, and then similar settings on my macbook?
But don't I have to hard wire it first somehow?

The Mac Book to 10.4.11 would only need the MB & Screen Sharing enabled on the 10.4.11 Mac
The 10.4.11 Mac would need CotVNC to control the MB.
One other option, but I don't know which models/OS versions it works on, but...
ScreenRecycler...
