Q: Performance after update to Maverick a total disaster.

I have an iMac, a Macbook Air, a Windows 7 laptop, a Synology DS212j NAS and a 100 Bps Network (router and switch).

All was working fine till I upgraded the two Macs to Maverick. Connecting to the DS212 is still smooth (via Finder). Accessing a folder (directory) on the DS212 takes 2 minutes. Opening a folder with 600 music files takes 5 minutes. Opening a 5 MB Foto takes 1 minute. Saving an Excel file takes 3 minutes.

Before the upgrade all was working fine with good performance. The Windows laptop has the same (good) performance as before. Its the two Macs that after the upgrade from OS X 10.7 to 10.9 (Maverick) are extremely slow when accessing the Synology. Even Time Maschine (files are stored on the DS212) runs into a timeout on both Macs. A total disaster so to speak as with the current performence the DS212 has become totally useless.

The Synology has the latest firmware. Other than Anti-Virus I switched off all services/applications on the DS212 (such as the media service, etc.). On the DS212, the Windows File Service is switched on (incl. SMB2). Also the Mac File Service AFP is switched on.

When I switch off the Windows File Service the Macs are still slow.

When I switch off the Mac File Service and setup the two Macs to access the DS212 via SMB2 (new feature of Maverick) the Macs are still equally slow.

After switching on/off the various services to test I rebooted all systems to make sure there's nothing "hanging". No difference. Everything remains slow.

I have no idea why. Searched in Internet and found not a single suggestion what this could be.

Anyone out there who could help? I'm highly disappointed in Apple as I wasted already hours on this. I'm even more disappointed as now Windows seems the better system than OS X.

Many thanks in advance.

Are you able to go back? It always states that there is no way back ... never tested it either.

I'm going to wait a day or two before upgrading - need to be sure something else didn't break along the way.

I'n just curious about this but does anyone know: Even if you're on a Mac, do you have to enable the SMB2 option in the DSM control panel even though that only seems to relate to windows?

    Regards

AFAIK, you do have to enable Samba 2 in the DSM settings (Enable SMB 2 and Large MTU) in the Windows File Service in Win/Mac/NFS in File Sharing and Privileges in Control Panel.

Otherwise, all Samba connections will be Samba 1.

How do you know that the SAMBA connection is really Samba 2 for sure and not Samba 1, even after setting that, I have no idea, but is something I'd love to know.

Any experiences with the new DSM patch? Anyone tried AFP to see if it is somehow affected?

I took the plaunge and upgraded. Not sure what Synology has actually done to improve file transfers with SMB2 because performance on my DS213+ with Mavericks is just as bad as it was before.

This is SO much a Mavericks problem because Synology's own iOS apps connect and perform very well indeed.

But again, are you sure your connection has been established as Samba 2?

I have now switched off AFP on my NAS and forcing my connections to use SMB with SMB2 enabled on the NAS.

Itunes sync's now stay at a constant speed and everything is looking a lot better.

The transfer speeds using finder from mac to nas have always been stable using AFP and SMB it seems to be something with itunes that causes the NAS to pause and slow down to a crawl before jumping back up again.

On the NAS you can see the IO wait jump from 10% to over 80% whilst it goes into this state with all lights on the NAS flashing like mad but no actual data being sent over the network.

So SMB has made syncing from my NAS workable again thankfully as ripping my hair out waiting hours and hours using AFP.

Yes you can you just have to change the Firmware version stated in the file "/etc.defaults/VERSION" to a number lower than the FW version you want to install

I am happy for you flexiboy. I am out of town for a while but when I'm back I'll upgrade both my iMac and my Synology.

Which transfer speeds are you getting?

After upgrading to DSM 4.3-3827 I see some improvments. Not as before, but clearly better.

Yes, after update to latest OSX 10.9.2  performance  SMB2 with Synology improves, but in compare  with Mountain Lion is bad. The same for AFP protocol.

Positive thing is, that transfer now never fails, like before.

For example 1.3GB file transfer about 9 minutes , with Mountain Lion about 3 minutes.

I can use Mountain Lion forever, but i miss iBooks. Maps not as much.

I dont like new design of Synology DSM 5.0 beta too and will stay with DSM 4.3.
