Q: Persistent permission problems

During normal use, I experience several problems that are related to incorrect permissions. I have set up two users:

"Work" (Admin)

"Play" (Standard)

For example, when I open one benchmarking app in "Play", it tells me that it couldn't fix some permission problems and that I have to do it myself. Also in "Play", the screenshot shortcuts don't work anymore (even though they are configured correctly). The list of examples goes and on.

To solve the problem, I opened Disk Utility and ran "Repair Disk Permissions". The result is as follows:

ACL found but not expected on “private/etc/apache2/users”User differs on “Users/Shared”; should be 0; user is 503.

Group differs on “Users/Shared”; should be 0; group is 20.

Permissions differ on “Users/Shared”; should be drwxrwxrwt ; they are drwxr-xr-x

User differs on “Users/Shared/.localized”; should be 0; user is 503.

Group differs on “Users/Shared/.localized”; should be 0; group is 20.

Permissions differ on “Users/Shared/.localized”; should be -rw-r--r-- ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .

ACL found but not expected on “private/var/root/Library”

ACL found but not expected on “private/var/root/Library/Preferences”

ACL found but not expected on “private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.stackshot.plist”

ACL found but not expected on “usr/libexec/cups/driver”

ACL found but not expected on “private/var/db/lockdown”ACL found but not expected on “private/var/root/Library/.localized”

ACL found but not expected on “private/var/root/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist”

However, even though the output suggests that Disk Utility has fixed the permisison problems, Disk Utility gives me the same output again after running "Repair Disk Permission" for a second time. I tried the same from the recovery mode during startup and had the same result. In recovery mode, I also ran the “Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs” function of the resetpassword utility. Again, without success.

How can I finally solve these permission problems?

OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

A few things, one those errors can safely be ignored. They are not affecting your system and they are definitly not causing the problem you are seeing.

Permission Repair in Disk Utility deals exclusively with system level files. It does nothing at the user level and will not touch permissions in users folders or in applications.

Sounds like you might have an installation problem with the application you are trying to run, How was it installed? It is intrusting that the Admin account (Work) does not have the issues, but the Standard account does.

If you make the Play account an admin account just as a test does it run OK? I'd go back through the installation steps for the application and make sure it was installed for use by all users and not just the user that installed it.

Addition: I also ran the third-party freeware tool "ACL Fix"  on the folders Applications, Library, System and Users folder of the Mac OS Partition - unfortunately without success.

You could try ACLr8, I found it worked fine on my Admin account anyway.

Right because you don;t have a systems permission problem you have an application problem. Either it was installed incorrectly, it is not meant to run for more then one user or else it wants to be run as admin

But without knowing the app and how it was installed all we can do is guess.

it tells me that it couldn't fix some permission problems and that I have to do it myself.

Right because it is running in a standard account. So either make Play  an admin account or else fix the permissions problems it is telling you it has from an admin account.

It is possible that if you make Play an admin account and run the app once it might fix what it needs to and you could then turn Play back into a standard account.

I gave "Play" admin rights but that didn't solve any of the problems. Also, I don't think that these problems are application-specific because they are numerous and diverse. As I mentioned above, one example is that the screenshot shortcuts don't work anymore in "Play".

So other apps on your system, standard Apple apps, are reporting problems?

Again without more info it's all a guessing game.

    good luck

The App Store always wants to update iMovie to version 10.0.2 (even though I have iMovie 11 installed and also installed to suggested update several times).

Also, when I use the "Play" account and switch to "Work" (while still being logged in in the "Play" account), the "Change Picture" option is suddenly activated in the "Desktop & Screensaver Options".

After running ACLr8, only one permission problem remained:

Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .

After running "Repair Disk Permissions" again, this one disappered also. For the first time in several months, Disk Utility doesn't show any permission problems. So thank you for this tip!

However, the practical problems, of which I described a few above, still exist - even after restarting the computer.

I wonder if the Screenshots are being collected but put in a location that is not obvious (maybe even the other user account, as it seems you can only set the one location).  Here are Terminal commands for changing the format and location.

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg  (png, jpg etc)

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /users/username/Documents/   (etc)

Please tell us what "Benchmarking" application you are running and what other problems you have, if permissions are out the way now.

No, that is not the reason. Before all these problems started, I could press command + option + 4 to select the area I wanted to have a screenshot of. Now, the cursor doesn't even change to indicate that I can select an area.

The benchmark app I use is Cinebench, which worked fine until yesterday but does't anymore. The desktop background problem I described above also still exists. So functionally, nothing seems to have changed since solving the permission problems.

Check the settings for the shortcut are enabled:   I don't know why they would change though. Perhaps you are looking at at refresh of the OS via the Recovery Partition.  I'd avoid cleaners and benchmarking until you have things running properly and well backed up.

I just realised that I pressed the wrong key combination. With the correct shortcut, I can select an area but get the following error message: "You don’t have permission to save files in the location where screen shots are stored."

Also, there is another error. When I try to open Firefox, I get the following error message: "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." (even though NO copy of Firefox is open).

I experience both problems only in the "Play" account. In the "Work" account, they don't appear.

That's what I meant by saying screenshots are saved in one location, presumably yours are set up to save in the admin account.  You could change each time, using the terminal command, but it is a hassle.  Did you try "Grab" in the Utilities folder?

Are you sure Firefox has been fully "quit" in the admin account.  Possibly it is just reduced to the dock.  You can enable the indicator lights in Dock Preferences, to check this.

    @ putnik

When I tried to change the screenshot destination through the terminal commands, I received the following error message: "Could not write domain com.apple.screencapture; exiting".

Firefox even gives me the "only one copy" error message when I restart the computer and directly log in as "Play".
