Q: mac osx 10.9 Mavericks wifi issue

Hi All,

I can confirm no237's comment that 10.9.2 did not resolve the bluetooth/wifi bug.  I am using a late 2013 15" MBP.  If I am connected to a 2.4 GHz router or hotspot card and bluetooth is on at the time the computer goes to sleep, upon wake up there are no WiFi connections available.  I have to turn off WiFi and then turn it back on in order to see SSIDs to reconnect.

This was a very well known and documented problem.  I am curious as to why this was not fixed with 10.9.2.

Maybe we will have better luck with 10.9.3.  Or, in the alternative hotspot manufacturers will have to come up with 5 GHz hotspots.

I've experience the same issue here: the Macbook doesn't connect to Wifi after sleep. Since many solutions concern turning off the bluetooth, I've concidered trying to automatically turn off the bluetooth on sleep and turn it on again on wakeup after the wifi is reconnected.

I've therefore combined these solutions

1. Blueutil provided by http://www.frederikseiffert.de/blueutil/
2. Sleepwatcher by bernhard beahr http://www.bernhard-baehr.de/

The first allows you to turn on and off bluetooth from the shell, the latter allows you to run scripts on sleep and wake. The solution seems to work here (Bluetooth turns off on sleep, Wifi reconnects on wakeup and the Bluetooth turns on after a few seconds).

I've used these scripts

(.sleep)

/usr/local/bin/blueutil off

(.wakeup)

sleep 5

/usr/local/bin/blueutil on

And taken the LaunchAgent approach explained in the readme of sleepwatcher

Mind you: this requires some knowledge of using Terminal and tinkering. I managed to get it working after a few hours. Since I'm no expert I won't be able to give much advice besides what I've posted. If there's anybody with some more scripting experience: give it a try and post your DIY guide.

Good news somehow. I am on 10.9.2 now for some hours and this seems to have solved my reconnection issues after sleep having bluetooth switched on. Hope this will last... Keep you posted.

I spent 1.5 hours with Apple resolving my Bluetooth/WiFi issue.  It looks like all is fixed now.  They had me do the following:

1) Delete all WiFi connection preferences.

2) In keychain, delete all references to airport.

3) In Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

Reboot your computer.

Following the the reboot, I no longer have a delay in finding 2.4 GHz networks with Bluetooth enabled.

Hope this works for others as it has worked for me.

Onto the next bug for us to complain about.  LOL.

YES!  My 10.9.2 wasn't logging in to any new WiFi spot requiring login, I think it had to do with the security fix apple added to 10.7.2 (which I never experienced, went from 10.6.8 directly to 10.9) in which the OS tries to reach a special site to insure the wifi isn't faking a connection that could lead to a false OS update being installed.  WiFi hotspots need to allow Macs to reach this site without granting general Internet privileges, or the Mac will never get to the hotspot's login screen. I had begun to suspect that a bunch of hotspots including Marriott were not doing the right thing, but as soon as I did these simple steps and rebooted, the Marriott login page came right up.  saved. 

I can confirm that since unchecking "Wake for Wifi network access", as mentioned by David in Germantown, I haven't experienced the problem at all. Bluetooth is on.

I have since updated to 10.9.2, and seeing as some people are still experiencing this issue it might be worth trying it out... IMO it's a lot less inconvenient than having to turn Bluetooth off!

Thx, it's just works for me. Wi-Fi connecting to preffered networks after sleep/reboot/power on and BT is ON

    Possible solution found? In trying for many hours to resolve this, I may have come across something... 

    If you are having network issues, and are using 10.9.x, and have tried any or all of the suggested solutions listed in this discussion thread try this:

• In "System Preferences" go to "Network"
• Click the gear in the bottom left
• Scroll down and click "Manage Virtual Interfaces"
• Delete any "Virtual Interface"
• Close "System Preferences"
• Re-open "System Preferences"
• Navigate to the "Network" section

    On my Mac the system scanned the network interfaces and found the Wi-Fi and activated it. Before this Wi-Fi wouldnt even show up as a network interface.

   Hope this helps somebody else!

what worked for me, after having the same lame problem.

--> changing the Preference setup for connections.Putting Wifi above the bleutooth made all the negativity evaporate :-)

I've never had any issues with wi-fi connectivity on my MBPro, until I upgraded to 10.9.2 a couple of days ago. Sometime today, for no apparent reason, it wouldn't accept the password to my home wireless network.

The solution posted by dgbarar solved the issue:

1) Delete all WiFi connection preferences.

2) In keychain, delete all references to airport.

3) In Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

Reboot your computer.

After re-entering my wireless password, it's working fine.

Tried it in 10.9.2. First time I got as far as entering the network password and the machine locked up. The second time as I hit apply for the new WiFi connection, the machine locked up. Third time got the new connection applied and it never saw any networks. Upon restarting again, the "Create" a network window was still there and in black and white after the desktop went gray up until the machine rebooted. Now upon start up after the whirlygig, I just have a gray screen with an Apple and things seem to be frozen again. Held the start button and upon restart Zapped the PRAM and . . . another lock up. WOW, I have never had this much trouble. Oh well. Thought I'd give it a go. We'll have to see what happens next?

Fifth time . . . WiFi won't turn back on. It's off in the CP and Menubar. Clicking on the "Turn Wi-Fi On" does nothing. Big red dot next to the connection and nothing. Time add an Ethernet connection.

I am experiencing the same issue

After upgrade to OSX 10.9.2 ( my Macbook Air mid 2012) simply looses wifi everytime it goes to sleep....even if the laptop is left inactive for a few minutes, wifi is lost as soon as the screen switches off..

Apple...fix it asap.

Don ("dgbarar")'s advice helped solve this problem for my Mac Air. Did you try this?

1) Delete all WiFi connection preferences.

I had already tried the first two steps a couple of times without success. It was the combination of three that seemed to be the fix!

Oh god oh god oh god!  This worked for me!  Thank you very much indeed - it's been driving me bonkers!!!
