(Please note that references to the original developers, Zeobit, also now refer to Kromtech Alliance Corp, who acquired MacKeeper and PCKeeper from ZeoBit LLC in early 2013.

Feb 26, 2014 2:41 PM in response to The hatterby The hatter,About using Cnet download.com and their download manger... DO NOT.
I just did not realize the issues with it having never used cnet but it appears that almost anything download can potentially contain an extra payload, even if just adware you do not want to touch it.
I have been slow to move to using or adopting AppStore having been old VersionTracker from before and then www.macupdate.com
Appologies (and how these two year old threads come back to life!).

Apr 1, 2014 4:38 PM in response to macmomma65by flymiester,Thank you for all of you that posted these fixes, I used the Phil Stokes line by line method for the older MacKrapper version 1.9. It worked perfectly. I've checked my activity monitor and there is no evidence of any MacKeeper or Zeobit left

Sep 7, 2014 10:49 PM in response to macmomma65by quivive,Hello,
Yesterday my Mac got infected by the tiresome MacKeeper as well. Hoping i can share my Mac's experience, and eventual recovery, thanks to Apple Customer Support:
- Constant popups, ads
- Unable to use Safari and Chrome. Mozilla Firefox was perfectly okay and unaffected by mackeeper
- No Application called MacKeeper or zeobit in my Mac System Preferences > Applications, or User > Applications folder.
- No files in Libraries under 'zeobit' or mackeeper tag.
- Thanks to help with 'Apple Customer Support', they helped me delete files tagged 'VSearch'. It was well concealed in the Libraries.
- From the '"Trash", Empty ALL the files. If it rejects stating "file is active and application is still running", move over to the "Activity Monitor">check for all running applications, and delete VSearch related applications.
- Restart OS.
- Do NOT at any cost follow any online instructions to "install mackeeper" in order to "uninstall" and there after get rid of it. This DOES NOT work, and might spiral things out of control.
Best Course of Action:
- Chat with Apple Customer Support. They have experts, who will assist us. They can only 'view' our screen, not 'control' it. They use a red arrow marker to direct us with various troubleshooting measures.
- MacKeeper has a different style of infecting each OS. Youtube medications do not always apply to our case in particular. Hence, contacting apple customer support is the easiest way out.
Safe Browsing,
